Worried about Breast lump. Breast referral coming soon

I found a lump in my left breast a month ago..I am 55 ..the doctor put me on antibiotics and antiinflamitaries for 2 weeks to rule out mastitis..as I've been on hrt...this didn't make any changes..I then contacted the doctors back as I had severe sternum pain which radiated and still does into my upper back. I was concerned about new "lumps" by my breastbone which the doctor examined and then booked me an emergency breast clinic appointment..this wad a week ago...I know of the 2 week rule..but am seriously losing the plot with worry and anxiety..I have been signed off work..but I'm now convinced that its spread and don't know what to do or feel...

  • Hi skyelillie,

Sorry to find you on here and that you're so worried and scared.  Fear and anxiety can take you to all sorts of bad places and you will only make yourself feel worse so try, if you can to take hold of yourself.  Breast lumps are very common.  I'm a similar age to you and was plagued by breast cysts since my late 40's.  They were all benign but troublesome and they caused me a lot of worry.
Most breast lumps are benign and only about 1 in 8 referrals  will result in a cancer diagnosis (this is what my GP told me at the time).  Unfortunately these things need to get checked out at the breast clinic and you will have a mammogram/ultrasound and maybe a biopsy.  Don't panic if they do a biopsy.  These are done just as much to rule out cancer, not just to confirm it.  Just being there and having to go through the process is pretty grim and the wait for results is tough but it helps to distract yourself and try to keep some perspective.

Earlier this year I was diagnosed with a small early breast cancer which was found when I was getting another cyst checked (cyst was fine)!  I'm pretty grateful for those cysts actually as it meant everything was found and treated promptly.  The thing is you won't know for sure until you get it checked.  You have to go through this unfortunately but when you skip out of that clinic with the all clear it's a fantastic feeling.  Likewise, if anything is found you will be well looked after and supported through the process.  In the unlikely event that a breast cancer is found there is so much now that can be done.

Dont forget stress can cause all sorts of symptoms and your sore sternum may be just inflamed cartilage in that area which is quite common.

Good luck with everything.  There's every chance you'll be fine.

    Mary

  • Hello,  I'm also waiting an appointment and thought I would comment. I found a dent/dimple in my breast in 2021, I have been to the doctor 4 times since about this as something just worrying me. I was told I had fibrosistic breasts and it would be changed with having a baby (nov 2020) I had another appointment 2 weeks about something ago and mentioned my breast as it still worries me. This Docotor was more concerned and apologised for the previous vists and has referred me to the breast clinic urgently. They called today and I have an appointment next Thursday. I am so scared but trying not to be as my partner isn't keeping so well just now and going through tests and I have 2 boys 7 and 2 this weekend. I really am thinking the worst as it was an urgent referral and the dent has tripled inside since when I first went about it. Just feel sick at the thought. Absolutely no advice for you but just thought I'd say that your not alone x
