Cervical / womb biopsy, cervical cancer?

Hi

I've posted on here before but I'm still non the wiser. Had random bloody discharge then a change in periods, from 3/4days to 17days every month for 4 months now ( spot three days prior, bleed seven then spot / bloody discharge for a further seven days). clear smear in nov 21 and put down to ectropion, had silver nitrate and did nothing

today after pushing and pushing- I had a colposcopy: it wasn't planned it was planned for the Gynae to give me further cauterisation on the erosion however she put dye in and it showed an area of ' cell changes' so she said she wanted to take a biopsy of my cervix instead. She then rooted around and said she wanted to take a bookish if my womb aswell which she did.

im now convinced with the area of changes, and her taking two biopsies that it must be cancer! Isn't it normal procedure to do a leep or letz etc?! She didn't remove the cells she said she wanted biopsies?

why would she does this and does the cell changes always mean cancer? So worried and will make myself I'll for weeks now until I know

  • Hi Elw16

It's very normal to take a biopsy during a colposcopy, and no, cell changes absolutely don't have to mean cancer. A biopsy will confirm what the cells are, as the doctor won't always know the level of abnormality just by looking at them. There are several stages of abnormal cells, so it's likely the doctor will want to confirm this before deciding on the right treatment. Sometimes a LLETZ is done at the first visit, but often it's not, so there's really nothing unusual in what as happened, although I appreciate it will be worrying for you.  If the level of cell change is low, you may not need any treatment at all, as these can regress on their own.

  • Thankyou for responsing :)

I just assumed if it was something ' not too bad' they would treat it there and then and not biopsy. I belive it was a small area of cell changes which is odd since I've had a clear smear in November last year. I just feel it is inevitable something sinister since I've got a lot of consistent symptoms and now these changes. Also a large erosion which previous Gynae had put all my symptoms down to and treat with silver nitrate, which has done nothing so another thing ruled out! And with her saying she'd like to take one from my womb too I've not heard that before

im overanalysing everything! My partner was going through chemo this time last year so this is really triggering
