Results from diagnostic thyroid lobectomy

Hi,

I recently had a right thyroid lobectomy due to a T3 nodule found earlier this year. I had this done on 19th October and just wondering how long I should expect to wait for results. I had a letter to book in for my outpatient appointment with the specialist, but this is for 25th November and I'm just hoping I won't need to wait that long for results?

I know this can differ between hospitals but just wondered if anyone had a similar experience and did they have to wait until their outpatient appointment or should I expect a phone call/letter before?

TIA

  • Hi [@Lily1000]‍

I am on the waitlist for a partial / total thyroidectomy. It is scheduled to be this side of Christmas. My biopsy results for 2 nodules are T3 as well, so I will be in your position soon and will be wondering the same.
What I would do is ring your consultants secretary because they can tell you if the results are available, although they can't give you the results just ask for a call back from your consultant.
Hope you hear soon and all is good.

  • Hi Rachel,

It's a worrying time waiting for an op date but it goes so quickly when you get the date and pre-op. I can't speak for total thyroidectomy, but the lobectomy was absolutely fine and I've been back to work teaching this week so have pretty much fully recovered in less than 2 weeks (just where my wound is it's a bit tight).

Thank you for your help and well wishes, I will wait until Thursday and call the secretary as it will have been 2 weeks by then.

Do get in contact if you want any reassurance / advice with your op.

  • Hi Lily

Thanks for the reassurance. My consultant told me to expect 6 weeks recovery but hopefully won't be that at all. I had my pre op 2 weeks ago so hopefully hear about a op date soon.
Glad to hear your recovery has went well. Hope you don't mind me asking but have they mentioned anything about further treatment if it cancer? At the moment it is just a matter of focusing on the surgery pending results, I'm happy with that but it is at the back of mind which way it could go.

  • Hi Rachel,

Yes I would assume it will be soon if you've had the pre-op now.

So I got my results through MyCare today in a letter on there - it was a non-cancerous benign growth so a massive relief.

My consultant did mention that if it were cancerous, they would need to take the other side of my thyroid out and potentially have radioactive iodine treatment. But like you said, I wouldn't think too much about that now and just focus on recovering from your first op - I know all too well this is easier said than done (I always assume the worst).

One piece of advice I would give straight after the surgery is to sit yourself up on the bed as soon as poss (and try to get up) as I needed to get up a few hours after I came around and I'd been lying down for so long I dropped in blood pressure and was sick everywhere

Any other questions I can answer let me know.

  • Hi Lily

Thanks for sharing your results, I'm so happy to hear it is benign. It gives me some hope, like you said it's so easy to assume the worst. You got your results back quite quickly. I hope you can put this all behind you now, it's so easy to get caught up in your own head over results and what if's. I will definitely remember that piece of advice so thank you.

    All the best

    Rachel
