Bowel Cancer ? Or IBS?

I posted earlier but re read and it made little sense!
My anxiety is through the roof and hardly sleeping

In April I had a change in bowel movement so went to GP. She tested me for calproctin and it said suspect IBS. Change was more time and consistency - could go to the loo at 3am and it was like swede (sorry tmi).

Had an ovarian cyst removed with laporoscopy in May but in July I saw blood in my poo. I used 4 Lloyds pharmacy FIT tests which came back positive so went to GP. He did 2 FIT tests (both negative) a blood test (normal) and an examination. He thinks I have IBS.

However I have constant stomach cramps, blood in my poo and my anxiety is off the scale. I don't know what to do next. GP says it's stress related IBS and won't refer me for a colonoscopy. I'm terrified of going to the loo in case there is more blood, I cry every half hour and I'm just passed myself. I can't escape the stomach cramps so no relief. I'm 42

  • I understand your concern I mean where is the blood coming from surely they would want to find that out ,if it was me I would try to pay for a private Colonoscopy if that's the only way to get one although I agree you shouldn't have to .

  • I am the same age as you and over a year ago, I had regular rectal bleeding (maybe 5 days a week at one point?) going on for two months or so, weight loss, occasional loose stools (maybe once a weekish) and trapped wind. I was referred for a colonoscopy but the consultant said that he would be very surprised if it turned out to be cancer, that at our age that was the least likely result and the odds weren't even 1%

It turned out to be hemmorhoids, which was what we all expected.

Given your age and the number of tests that were clear, I would say bowel cancer is very unlikely in your case. If the doctor thinks it's IBS, then that is the most likely option and bowel cancer is not the next most likely after that. Other options include hemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's, a polyp, certain infections... All of those are probably more likely than bowel cancer.

I can see why you would be concerned about not getting a colonoscopy though, because even if the odds are fairly tiny, it makes sense that you'd want certainty.

  • I also used the Lloyds FIT tests and they returned a positive result. I then did a qFit test through my GP and that was negative. So it seems the Lloyds test is a bit like a Covid test and gives a result in a few minutes, but doesn't quantify how much blood it's detected. It's just detected blood which could be from anything, like bleeding gums

See your GP and demand a qFit test or do a proper qFIT test online. Costs about £80.
