Skin cancer scare need someone to talk to.

Hi I'm a 27 year old girl, I have had a red patch on my skin since 2019 and not thought anything over it. It's a slightly raised small shiny pink patch of skin on my upper left thigh. I've had this since 2019 and it's not grown or gotten any bigger. My sister has recently just had a mole taken off which was melonma. They caught it early and managed to get it all out. With having health anxiety I went to docs to get this checked and she's sending me for an urgent referral to see dermo in 2 weeks along with pics to get taken at my local hospital in 48 hours. (Monday morning)

im actually so scared and annoyed at myself for leavin something on my skin that is unusual for 3 year. Is there anyone on here that's been in the same situation? The more I look at my spot and the more I look into it resemmbes basil cell and im just so worried that because I've left it for years im not going to have a positive outcome. I can't vent to anyone at home because I don't want to make them worried.

thanks in advance x

  • Hi,

It's good that you're getting checked out by dermatology. Hopefully it will be a benign lesion but if it's a basal cell, like you fear, the delay in getting it diagnosed and treated will have little or no adverse effect. Basal cell isn't usually invasive so it doesn't spread internally like melanoma can. A delay in treatment may just cause it to spread on the skin. Basal cell is easily treated so try not to worry.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi angie,

thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I have really bad health anxiety so struggle to keep calm. I have been a mess all weekend sick with worry. I think I'm just so worried as this has been left for 3 year and I'm so angry with myself.

can meloma be a red, pink patchy spot also? I have looked into this so much and scared myself so much. It almost seems impssobile to wait until Monday just for the pictures to be taking. Can I ask what your symptoms where?

Can these types show up in blood work or anything?

    thaks again

    xx

  • I'm hoping you've had the pictures taken this morning and that they may have given you more information.

There is currently no blood test that detects melanoma. Research in Australia is currently looking into this.

There are no symptoms with melanoma other than the mole or lesion. Symptoms only appear if the melanoma has spread internally and these are many and varied. Melanoma can be any colour but it's usually dark coloured.

  • Hi, I don't want to scare you, but your concerns are valid. My doctor explained to me that there are some melanomas that are pigmentless, which are pink in colour. You have to go to a dermatologist as soon as possible, you need diagnostics, a photodermatoscope, maybe a biopsy, something else. You can't wait.  Good luck to you.
