Neck Lump

Hi Everyone,

I have a lump in the back of my neck that I first noticed in 2019 that's hard, immovable and around 4cm long/2cm wide and is not painful. I've been meaning to get it checked for a long time but I'm not much of a worrier and haven't got around to it. I've been to a walk in doctor today (couldn't get in GP until end of Nov) as I have been getting shooting and throbbing pains in the areas next to the lump the last few days and have the sensation like it is pushing on it's surrounding areas. I do get an aching feeling from it every couple of days and have for a while. I appreciate I should have got it checked out a lot sooner. The doctor said it's seems like it's quite deep as in not a lump on the surface and has referred me for an urgent ultrasound and said this should show what the lump is. He said the wait for urgent referrals can be up to 6 weeks right now and I'm starting to worry a bit. I have lost my appetite quite a bit in the last few months but if anything I've put weight on and I have also been getting extremely tired and feeling like I have to take naps in the day which is very unusual for me but that may be due to having hypothyroidism. Hoping it's nothing but was wondering if anyone had any opinions on what it could be based on what I've described? I'm a 28 year old female btw.

Thank you!

Jenny

  • Hello Jenny and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

You did the right thing in going to get it checked by the walk in doctor rather than having to wait for the GP appointment at the end of November. I am sorry to hear you are having to wait up to 6 weeks for your ultrasound appointment. Unfortunately no one here will be able to tell you what it might be based on what you've described but I hope that you will hear from some of our members who may have had similar experiences and hopefully the ultrasound will shed some light on what it might be.

Waiting weeks for your ultrasound is bound to be nerve racking and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that you get some definite answers soon and that you find out what is causing these symptoms. Keeping everything crossed for you that it turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,
