Worried! Changes in mole and been referred

Hi all, I have had a mole for quite some time, i noticed it starting  to change in August I phoned my GP ASAP. It took 11 weeks to be seen by a dermatologist, anyway since the examination I have been referred to a hospital in Manchester. The last 2 weeks my mole has started to change dramatically bleeding itching and crusting over. Just getting really concerned for why they referred me to this hospital and not to the Biopsy there? Also they have told me they need the plastic surgeon to do this? Do you think they think it's cancerous foe them referring me there? It's quite worrying to say the least just want to know if anyone has had this happen before and their experiences please thank you

  • Hi Laura,

95% of moles removed are done by Plastic Surgeons. The only time a dermatologist will remove a mole is If they are also qualified in surgery and they have the time, facilities and staff to remove it at the referral appointment. I've had 7 removed over the years and all were done by Plastics whilst my brother had one removed, at the referral appointment, by the dermatologist.

As for being referred to a different hospital, it's probably because the hospital where the dermatology department is located doesn't have a Plastics department. My niece has had 2 moles removed - she sees a dermatologist at her local hospital but had the surgery at the hospital which is a large hospital trust (where I go). So don't assume that the change of hospital means anything negative.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
