Lump under chin - not visible externally

Hi everyone - I hope this is the right forum.

I've got a doctors appointment next week to have a lump under my chin looked at. I'm 24 female & It's hard but moveable ( I think - I don't know if I'm just pushing skin around ) and maybe like 1/2 cm big. It hurts a bit and has been quite sore but I can only really feel it when I put my chin to my chest and it moves.

I've had it for maybe a couple of months but no other systems than a pain in my ear sometimes and a twitch in my left eye ( same side as the lump) but I do drink a lot of coffee so I'm not sure.

I'm on the NHS waiting list to have mt impacted wisdom tooth removed ( again on the left side) but I'm not sure if it's being caused by that or if it's cancer. Any similar issues / results from the issues would be much appreciated Im really really worried.

  • Worked in a dental environment for a good few years (not as a dentist, may i add). The nodes under your chin tend to drain from the floor of your mouth, the front of your tongue and bottom lip. Though, a general viral infection can also cause swelling in random nodes.

Impacted wisdom teeth, should there be an infection, cause swellings on the face or neck. So whilst not impossible, your impacted wisdom teeth are probably fine at the moment.

The fact that it's sore is also a good sign, believe it or not. As you're on here, it's obvious what you're thinking, and with that in mind, cancerous lumps tend to be non-painful. Movable is also good. Some lymph nodes once they have swelled never really go back to their non palpable self. It is common that they remain palpable for life.

1/2 cm is also well within normal range. Playing around with nodes constantly can aggravate them and make them enlarge and become tender. Try to leave it alone (I know, easier said than done) for a few days and see if things settle. The ear and eye things are probably unrelated. Chin nodes would be causing issues in your mouth more than likely rather than your ear. Those 2 things could very well be your wisdom teeth. Or clenching/grinding your teeth if you're worrying about things.

  • Thank you for your comment - it's under my jawline between my ear and tip of my chin. I admittedly have been doing a lot of poking and prodding whilst sat at work as it only seems to come out when I look down - will post an update after my appointment :)
