What is the MRI looking for? Anxious!

Hi All

I should preface this by saying I have serious anxiety!

It all started about 3 months ago when I felt what seemed like a swollen lymph node in my upper neck. Slowly I started to feel something in the right side of my throat, tonsil area. When looking myself, the right side looks different and the lingual tonsils are visible underneath the right tonsil however not on the left.  GP wasn't concerned and said it felt normal. A few weeks later I could still feel this lump and had the sensation so GP agreed to refer to ENT. ENT did a camera down the throat and said all normal, felt lymph node and said it felt moveable and small but would refer to ultrasound.

Had the ultrasound and the tech was seemed perplexed as to why I was there, said all nodes look normal, 6mm and nothing else they could see.

Back to ENT for follow up. It was a different consultant this time. He had a look at my tonsils and noted scarring on the right, he said likely from illness as a child. He had a good feel of my throat and mouth, then said we will do an MRI just to "close the book on it." What does that even mean!? What exactly is he looking for with an MRI?

I complained about excess mucus. It almost feels like mucus is getting stuck in my right tonsil and that is causing the sensation.

The ENT did have two students in the room and I'm wondering if he was just setting an example and doing it 100% by the book.

I am hoping that someone can reassure me that by now one of these tests I've had would have shown if something sinister was going on, and would things have progressed to a more obvious problem in a 3 month period?

My mind is going in to over drive waiting for this MRI appointment, and don't even get me started on the idea of a contrast MRI. We are trying for a baby and so I'm not keen for contrast at all.

  • Hello Okbutthenwhat and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation but I'm glad that you took charge and are having your tonsils properly checked.

With all that is going on is easy to understand why you're concerned but try to keep in mind that they just want to make sure everything is fine before, like they said, closing the book on it.

Having said that, there are many other forum members here who will understand exactly how you're feeling and I hope some of them will pop in soon to have a chat and offer support.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that before your next appointment you feel like it could be helpful to speak with someone medically trained over the phone, our team of nurses are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this number 0808 800 4040.

I hope all goes well for you, Okbutthenwhat.

    With best wishes,

  • Thanks for the replies.

After my previous post PALS finally managed to get a message to me via email stating that the consultant is not concerned but the MRI is to try and find out why I am experiencing the problems I am.

However, he has said this "cystic lesion" is unrelated and since he could not feel it when he examined me, He is not concerned.

The ultrasound clearly saw it though, so it exists. Meaning that he would be concerned had he felt it himself.

Apprently it is in my sublingual gland and everything I read about tumors is a death sentence, albeit a slow one as it almost always comes back within a decade, To the lungs. I'm only 33.

I am so upset that the consultant did not Mention this "cyst" to me. Are ultrasounds good at knowing cyst from Tumor? I didn't have my follow up until 2 weeks after the ultrasound and part of me thinks it wasn't suspicious but the other half thinks I got lost in the system and the urgency wasn't relayed as I saw a different consultant the second time round. Perhaps the urgent message re suspicious cyst went to the wrong person.

I had my MRI on Monday and haven't heard anything. Deep down I am hopeful that if they'd found a tumor they'd have called me by now, but malignant tumors in this specific area are incredibly rare that I'm concerned they'd have to seek specialist advice on what to do with me.

My head is a mess and I can barely function. I've got a 2 year old and my heart is broken at the thought of not being there for him growing up.

  • So I had my follow up appointment today where I was told the MRI was normal. They said this cyst has no worrying features.

They could tell I was anxious and in the end they said we can repeat the MRI in 3 months if I wish. I declined on the basis that they were telling me I was perfectly fine and there was no need, but now I'm worrying!

If they felt a repeat in 3 months necessary, am I right in thinking they'd have stated it matter of fact rather than offer it as an option to me?

  • If your still worried in 3 months contact the consultant and ask for the scan you may find when you relax, you'll feel ok.

    take care
