Potential Thyroid Cancer

Hi

Back at the beginning of June I noticed a lump in my neck - went to the GP who then put me on a urgent 2 week referral with the hospital. I went and had a biopsy done and  that came back inconclusive. So it was suggested to remove it and half of my Thyroid as this will be the only way to know for definite what the lump is. After my surgery the Doctor said they would have the results in 7-14 days. I'm now almost 4 weeks post surgery and have my follow up appointment on the 7th November. I'm guessing the didn't find anything as no one has told me the results or will they give me the results on the 7th? I'm just wondering if anyone has been through something similar that could give me some advise. I don't want to turn up for the appointment thinking everything is fine and they are just checking everything has healed properly only to get blindsided with results I wasn't expecting.

  • Hey Lid91,

I noticed you haven't had a reply just yet so I just wanted to welcome you to the community and let you know your post has been seen.

I hope your recovery from your surgery is going well although I'm sorry you have no information about what will be happening at your appointment next month.

Hopefully some of our members who have been through this process will offer their insight and experiences to you soon but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

We're thinking of you Lid91 and wishing you all the best for the 7th.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • I hope you're okay. Sorry I can't be of much help. I found a lump in April. Had the fine needle biopsy in May and like you, the result was under terminate. I was told I would need an operation within 4 months to remove half the thyroid and have the core biopsy done to deterMine if it's cancer. I'm still waiting. I chase weekly and there's no date. I'm amazed you had your surgery so quickly. Unfortunately my consultant is breast too and possible breast cancer seems to take priority over thyroid so he still hasn't got a thyroid surgical rotation. The wait is draining. Were you seen in the NHS? Good luck with the results. I hope all is well.

  • Hi CazStu

    Thank you for your reply.
I was seen in the NHS by the ENT department of the hospital and everything happened relatively quickly.
I agree the waiting is the worst part of it all just not knowing either way but I guess it all takes time and there are other people in the same boat.
I was told by my consultant if it is cancer it tents to be slow growing and they have something like a 96% success rate so that is a positive out of the negative I guess.
I hope you get a date for your operation soon and good luck with your recovery, wish you all the best with your results.
