Risk of lymphadema from singular axillary lymph node biopsy?

Hi all. I'm a 35M going in for an axillary lymph node biopsy on an enlarged node I've had for ~18 months. I've had three ultrasounds - one inconclusive and the other two not suggestive of anything untoward, but my specialist wants to draw a line under it by doing the biospy as it is quite large/firm and hasn't gone down. No other concerning symptoms (weight loss/night sweats/fatigue).

I was wondering if there is any risk of lymphedema or long term swelling occuring from a biopsy of a single node? I was told they're not removing the node entirely but taking a majority of it for the sample. The reason I am concerned is because I have already been having a lot of water retention/swelling for a few years in my upper chest/armpits/trunk and sometimes in my ankles too.

Thanks in advance for any replies :) Kristian

  • Hello bananasincustard,

The best person to speak to about your questions and concerns is your specialist. When you're worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers online, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better.

I can understand that waiting for answers can be difficult, but there are some tips here that I hope will be useful as you wait.

    Best wishes,
