High FC, urgent colonoscopy when pregnant, bowel cancer?

I am 27 weeks pregnant and suffered with awful constipation. I have suffered with ibs since I was a child.
Over the last 2 months I have been suffering with pain under my right rib, it tends to flare up now and then. My skin in that area is tender to touch also. Also lower back pain and nausea. Over the last month it has got worse. I was treated for ibs, had a gallbladder scan to make sure it wasn't gallstones all clear. All my blood work had been normal. I have had bright red blood on my stools especially when I have been constipated. I had a random phase of softer stools, more frequent and with loads of mucus type stuff in the stools. My go tested my stool twice within a week of each other and my inflammation marker has come back both times at 300. The softer stools lasted around a week during that time I had terrible digestive issues, gas that smelt horrendous and pains just before I had gas like contraction type pain. That has eased off. Still gassy but not like I was in the period of time. Now my stools are hard and I'm going every other day. It hurts to pass them sort of burns and I get bright red blood on them. A lot of tummy rumbling also. My pain in the right side has got worse and radiates into my back. My gp has referred me for an urgent colonoscopy which I'm dreading. I was in triage with the pain yesterday and they did some bloods and my liver function test came back every so slightly elevated. I have young children and I am petrified this is bowel cancer. It's all I can think about and it has me in tears. My dr has never mentioned cancer but has wrote on my notes IBD? Iv googled and googled read so many stories I have scared myself stupid. I'm going out my mind and I'm petrified. Does anyone have any similar experiences/symptoms?

  • IBD means ulcerative colitis or Crohn's. It sounds like your doctor is referring you for a colonoscopy primarily because he is concerned you might have one of these and not because he thinks you might have cancer. A lot of the symptoms are similar and I think inflammation may particularly indicate IBD?

  • They have been very vague. I have had to push and push for things to go further as it was put down to pregnancy at first! Till the softer stools started and I sent pictures into the GP. I was prescribed alsorts! The blood panics me. I do suffer from health anxiety which I had under control with CBT Therapy but this situation is my worse nightmare. This is my 3 rd and last pregnancy I'm gutted I'm not enjoying it. Over the last few days Iv had pain in my left side also. It's like it runs down my bowels if that makes sense? The consultant I saw yesterday doesn't think it's pregnancy related howeve in my last pregnancy I had a liver issue with a 90% chance of it recurring in another pregnancy it goes once that baby is born so it could be a reason for the raised LFT? The dr has put me down the 2 week pathway which has panicking me. My mum keeps saying it because I'm pregnant and suffering not because the gp thinks I have cancer. I'm just so so scared and in my head I'm think the worse possible case.

  • I don't think the two week pathway is necessarily anything to worry about. I think they do that if the symptoms make cancer a possibility even if they think it very unlikely. Like it's better for 97 people to get an appointment within two weeks and find there is absolutely nothing from than for the 3 who have cancer to have to wait any longer. Plus, whatever is causing the problem, it's good to find out as soon as possible, as if it is something like IBD, the sooner you get treated the better and if it's nothing serious, then finding out means you can relax sooner. I think if you have bleeding and a change in bowel habits, you are likely to get an urgent appointment.

I'm no expert or anything, but just from what I've read.
