Bowel Cancer

Morning all very worried here sat crying as type.

So a few weeks ago after a bout of constipation i started to have pensil stools, after 2 weeks of ot not settling i contacted my GP , who arranged for a FIT test and Faecal Calprotectin.

Fit test is positive at 10

Faecal Calprotectin 99.6.

I am so so worried can anyone help

  • I am no expert, but your FIT test is very barely positive. 10 is the cut-off and you will see people here with scores of over 400. As 9 comes close to ruling out bowel cancer, I would guess bowel cancer would still be pretty unlikely at 10.

Hope you get an answer soon and it turns out to be something really minor.

  • [@MargaretMary]‍ Thank you for your reply.

At first when i saw my results of 10 i wasnt overly worried then the GP scared me saying 10 is still positive and a 2ww is needed to rule out cancer i lost my mum who was in her 30s to lung cancer and her mum was 32 when she died of bowel cancer

im just so so worried and cant take my mind of it now ive been told the calprotectin level is 99. something i dont undertand any of it

  • Hi it must be hard for you to get these test results, especially with what your mum and grandma went through.

Like MargaretMary said, your FIT test is the lowest positive. It is great that you're on the 2ww so they can rule out cancer (which is important considering your family history) and you should find out what is causing your symptoms very soon. Hopefully it will be something less serious. So many things can cause blood in poo.

As your faecal calprotectin test is between 50-250ug/g, it is an indeterminate result for GI inflammation. If it was over 250ug/g, it would be an indicative result of active GI inflammation.

They should ask you to send another faecal sample in 4-6 weeks. If it's still over 50ug/g, they may refer you to a gastroenterologist. If they don't get back to you, you may want to call and ask them about this.

I hope everything turns out okay. If this is at all reassuring, I had a FIT test of >400 and I turned out to have haemorrhoids.

  • Hi Thank you for your replyb what do you mean when you say As your faecal calprotectin test is between 50-250ug/g, it is an indeterminate result for GI

  • Hi no worries.

An indeterminate result for gastro instestinal inflammation means that there may be inflammation in your digestive system but there may not. The result is slightly positive.

That is why they should get you to do a repeat test to decide if they should refer you to a gastroenterologist, as your result is not that high thankfully.

If there is inflammation, it could be caused by a condition like Crohns disease or Colitis.

  • Hi, I am going through. Similar journey, but without knowledge of family history. My FIT test was 48.2 after around 8 weeks of diarrhoea with odd bouts of constipation , due to medications my usual is to be constipated.

I am going through the two week protocol. And the consultant contacted me monday and I had a CT scan today due to fear of colonoscopies due to previous  traumatic  experiences,

I have many symptoms of colorectal cancer, but no significant weight loss ( though I could have done with that and them kept the other symptoms !) I am 44 and have rather complex health issues, so I am quite convinced I am wasting the NHS times And money and that if anything it is generalised inflammation. I do though appreciate that they are taking it seriously Nd trying to help me. It's amazing how guilty I  feel about  taking up their time and money.

I hope that everything turns out well for you and I shall try and remember to check back!

  • I have colonrectal cancer. Tumor is large but not spread to any other areas. Why are you worrying about something that hasn't happened or been confirmed!. If you have blockage due to Tumor you will have other sythoms like blood in stools. A colonoscopy is what my doctor recommended following my sythoms. I have stage 3 cancer. Stop worrying about nothing and reading crap on the Internet! I,m here looking for exercise information and trying to enjoy my life. I suggest you do the same as its a wonderful life you only get one. Going for a cycle, in the rain with a head of chemo !

  • I'm not concerned, I thought I had made that clear?

  • Ah I see, thank-you. I'm think their family history has them a little off kilter. But hopefully they're absolutely fine! I wish you well on your journey also.
