Throat pain- 10 month waiting list

Hi - I noticed a soar throat back in December thought nothing of it but it was still here in May 2022, so I made an appointment to see a doctor they've done an Ultrasound and didn't find anything and  referred me to ENT in August, I haven't heard anything further so I phoned the hospital to be told there is a 10 month back log so don't expect an appointment until June 23. The pain has gotten worse and is now always there rather than just when I swallow, it also now feels like somthing stuck in my throat and I've also got a cough that won't go and my voice has changed slightly

The doctors don't seem that bothered  but when I checked on the CRUK website I seem to have 4 symptoms for laryngeal cancer not sure what to do June 23 seems a long way off, if it is Cancer will this delay affect any treatment?

Thanks

  • Hello Phil2609 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

You did well to book that appointment to see your doctor and it's reassuring that after doing the ultrasound they didn't find anything concerning. What a shame though that there has been this backlog and you are having to wait so long to be seen.

I can understand why you are feeling worried as the pain has got worse recently and is always present now. Our website is indeed a reliable source of information on cancer but there are so many other things it could be which could explain your symptoms so try not to assume it is cancer even though some symptoms seem to match what is described on our website. Perhaps you could try and seek another opinion and ask to talk to a different GP? You can find out more about how to get a second opinion on this page and when you talk to this doctor, make sure you mention that you are concerned by what you read and worried about your symptoms and that the pain has got worse recently and is constant and that things have changed a bit recently, that the cough has become persistent and your voice has changed slightly.

I hope that you manage to talk to someone about this again soon and that things improve quickly for you.

    Best wishes,

  • I called the doctor and told him of my new symptoms that have appeared I know have a ENT appointment tomorrow. Not sure what to expect though slightly nervous about that

  • Hey Phil,

It's good to hear you're keeping your GP updated about your symptoms.

Hopefully this information has been passed on to the ENT department but if nothing is mentioned about this during your appointment, do be sure to let them know whilst you're there.

Many of our members have had ENT appointments so hopefully some of them will be along soon to let you know what to expect but if you'd like to have a quick chat with one of our nurses about this, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you Phil and wishing you all the best for tomorrow.

    Kind regards,
