T3 result after FNA. How long did you wait for the op?

Hi.
I have a lump to one side of my thyroid which is clearly visible in the mirror, especially when I swallow. I had a FNA on May 17th and my consultant told me on June 1st that the result was T3a i.e. inconclusive with abnormal cells being found. I was told that I would have a partial thyroidectomy and lump removal / core biopsy within 4 months. I've chased but am still waiting. So in the meantime I thought it would make sense to repeat the FNA and that was 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting for those results. Im trying to be patient and keep a check on my anxiety but it's a struggle. I had breast cancer in 2019 and am a bit wobbly about it all. I'd love to share the wait with others in the same boat as this waiting room for one feels a bit lonely. Thanks for listening to me waffle on! X

  • I'm so sorry you're having to wait so long for your surgery CazStu.

As you say, being patient for so long can be very challenging, especially when you feel like you're on your own, but the Cancer Chat community are here for you and we will all have our fingers crossed you hear something soon.

I'm sure you will receive some more moral support and get to hear how long others had to wait soon but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you CazStu and hope the results of your repeated FNA provide some more conclusive answers when they come through.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks Steph. My consultant's secretary has phoned me and my repeated FNA has again come back inconclusive. So I'm still in limbo with a might / might not have cancer. She has also said that there is still no date for surgery. So, I'm devastated. It's my understanding that 1:2 FNA results can be inconclusive but I was still surprised to get this result a second time. I'm now even more worried that this might be secondary breast or the relatively rare follicular thyroid cancer as I believe these two scenarios tend to show up as inconclusive and can only be firmly diagnosed with surgery and a core biopsy.

I honestly doubt they'll be someone on here in the same boat. Plus I wouldn't wish this waiting and stressing on anyone.

Never mind. But thanks again for your reply and compassion x
