Worried about Colorectal cancer

Hi,

I feel a bit silly posting this, I'm not even sure why I am but I just feel extremely worried and I guess I just needed to get it all out.

Im 31 years old (f), I have 2 children aged 7 & 3.

I've been having stomach issues for over a year now. Pain in stomach when passing stool, loose stool most of the time or I'll not be able to go for 3-5 days constipated. I have regular bouts of diarrhoea and constantly bloated, mucus in stool and sometimes blood. I'm also so tired all the time.

i week to my GP around 6 months ago, she felt my stomach and did a blood test for celiac - all clear.

She said I might have a food intolerance so I did a food diary and couldn't really rule anything out in that sense.

I left it another 6 months until recently my symptoms are worse, I now have a constant noisy rumbling stomach and lots of gas. I have been feeling a strange pressure in my back passage and lower back ache constantly.

I work in healthcare and decided (embarrassingly) to examine myself due to the feeling of fullness/pressure and to my absolute horror I found a hard round mass (est 3-5cm) on my rectal wall. It's hard, non moveable and doesn't hurt to touch.
I did think it could be a hemoroid but it's too hard I think.

I've got a physical examination booked for Thursday (4 days away), bloods booked for next weekend and a stool sample to drop off.

I know I'm so young and very very unlikely to have cancer but I'm so so scared, I can't even carry my 3 year old with the pain in my back. I'm classed as a healthy weight and haven't lost a significant amount recently, just a few pounds here and there.

Thank you to anyone who's read this and apologies for the long post.

K x

  • Hi, I'm just updating this for anyone to read as future reference.

I've been triaged (via 2 week cancer pathway) and I've been referred for an urgent colonoscopy. I've read a few things on here about them being awful so I'm worried about that but also just want it to be over and done with.

It's been over 3 weeks now since my referral so I rang the appointment line and got through to the colorectal department who said they had sent the request through to the colonoscopy place earlier in the week, got through to them and they said they hadn't received the request (annoying). Glad I chased it up, they sent the request 'again' and apparently I should receive a phone call before lunch time tomorrow .

also I have recently been suffering with pressure feeling in my lady parts, it seems the lump is felt on both sides through the wall between (sorry for the graphic details).

so so worried, just want to know what it is so I can move on with my life.

  • Hi sorry to hear about your circumstances I had a colonoscopy in September and I have to say I never felt a thing  I had sedation and quite honestly it seemed to be over in 5 mins although I'm sure it wasn't that quick she told me there and then she couldn't see anything nasty although I did heve a polyp which they removed and did a few biopsies which all came back fine ,I realise everyone is different and some people have said the colonoscopy was painful but it wasn't for me ,I hope all goes smoothly for you .

  • People seem to have widely different experiences of colonoscopy. Like Jenny, I didn't feel a thing. The only really unpleasant part was beforehand when my backside was raw from using the toilet so often. I reccommend Sudocream to help with this. I only thought of it the morning of my colonoscopy and thankfully the local shop had some. It really helped.

The other thing I will mention because it was...odd, is that the sedation meant I forgot odd things about it. I was told beforehand that it had an amnesiac effect and many people don't remember much about the procedure at all, but I assumed that meant I would forget say an hour or two. Instead, it was more like I remembered half a sentence but not the other half. My mother (who accompanied me) was quite confused a day or two later when I was worried about some aftereffect because "they told you to expect that?" I had no memory of that whatsoever. But when she said "yeah, remember when they told you to expect that and other side effect," I completely remembered them mentioning other side effect but not that one. I also do not remember how I got to the recovery room - no memory of going from the surgery to the recovery room, but I remember what other patients I saw when I entered the recovery room.

Not a big deal but it was a bit weird. I do not know if this is a common experience or not.

  • [@Jenny3109][@MargaretMary]‍ thank you so much for your replies.

I was hoping to hear some not so awful stories about colonoscopies and you have both put me at ease. I know everyone is different and I may have an alternative experience but it's comforting to know it's not awful for everyone.
I will be opting for sedation, it would be nice if my husband could accompany me but I'm not sure it that would be possible.

hopefully I'll have a date for the procedure tomorrow (fingers crossed).
I keep telling myself that I'm young and the odds are in my favour but I can't function at the moment, the thought of not being able to be there for my children is harrowing.

I'll post any updates on my journey on here.

    Thank you. K x

  • Hi [@Mario11]‍,

I've not had my colonoscopy yet as there seemed to have been a mix up at the hospital (annoyingly). I'm going to ring the department tomorrow to chase it up.

  • Last thing you want when ur worried. Hoping all goes ok for you x

  • I've got my colonoscopy booked for 25th November (week on Friday).

very nervous but want it over and done with, worried about what they will find but hoping for the best.

  • Hi

I had my colonoscopy on the 7th and was immediately put on the 18 week pathway. I felt no pain at all during the procedure and was given sedation and painkillers beforehand. I chatted all the way through and the sister has called me everday.

I have my mdt tomorrow but the sister called today to say the scan shows it hasnt spread. If it wasnt for the unit sister i would have gone off my head. That was my greatest fear.

I know i have a battle ahead of me but will do it.

I know that the nhs will do everything in their power to help me get through this.

Those battling with this horrible disease try to stay strong. Get all the support you need from whoever you can.

  • Hi [@Gilly37]‍

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm glad to hear the colonoscopy for you wasn't painful but I'm deeply sorry for your news.
It's good it hasn't spread and you seem to have a great positive attitude. All the best with your treatment, Ill look out for updates on your journey through this horrible disease.
