Worried about Colorectal cancer

Hi,

I feel a bit silly posting this, I'm not even sure why I am but I just feel extremely worried and I guess I just needed to get it all out.

Im 31 years old (f), I have 2 children aged 7 & 3.

I've been having stomach issues for over a year now. Pain in stomach when passing stool, loose stool most of the time or I'll not be able to go for 3-5 days constipated. I have regular bouts of diarrhoea and constantly bloated, mucus in stool and sometimes blood. I'm also so tired all the time.

i week to my GP around 6 months ago, she felt my stomach and did a blood test for celiac - all clear.

She said I might have a food intolerance so I did a food diary and couldn't really rule anything out in that sense.

I left it another 6 months until recently my symptoms are worse, I now have a constant noisy rumbling stomach and lots of gas. I have been feeling a strange pressure in my back passage and lower back ache constantly.

I work in healthcare and decided (embarrassingly) to examine myself due to the feeling of fullness/pressure and to my absolute horror I found a hard round mass (est 3-5cm) on my rectal wall. It's hard, non moveable and doesn't hurt to touch.
I did think it could be a hemoroid but it's too hard I think.

I've got a physical examination booked for Thursday (4 days away), bloods booked for next weekend and a stool sample to drop off.

I know I'm so young and very very unlikely to have cancer but I'm so so scared, I can't even carry my 3 year old with the pain in my back. I'm classed as a healthy weight and haven't lost a significant amount recently, just a few pounds here and there.

Thank you to anyone who's read this and apologies for the long post.

  • Hi I am sure it's a hemorrhoid but it's good that you're getting yourself checked out. Do not let them fob you off. I don't know why when you presented with these symptoms they didn't do a fit test. I thought I had hemorrhoids and I did but I also had a precancerous polyp and I was 30 years old.

  • Hi Sabr

thank you for your reply. I am hoping it's something benign but all my other symptoms are playing on my mind.

I asked about a FitTest but she said she needed a normal stool sample first, not sure why but at least I have my physical examination on Thursday so hopefully I'll get some answers then.

Do you happen to know what size your polyp was? I'm only asking as I'm thinking this could be what I have too but mine feels pretty large.

    Best,

  • Hey [@NorthernStar]‍ they first initially said it was 30mm so 3cm but after they got it out they realised it was around 4.5cm So they actually don't know properly till they get it out I guess. I did think maybe it grew in the time in between colonoscopy and procedure but I was told that was unlikely. Xx

  • It's good they got it out and found it in time. And good that you recognised that there was something not right.

I just want answers now and to hopefully know that I'm okay so I can stop stressing over it.

    Thanks so much

  • Hi,

    Thought I'd do an update.

I've been for a physical examination today and the dr said she can feel a sort of mass/lump as I suspected.

She said with my age it's very unlikely that it's anything serious but with my other symptoms I will need further investigations.

i have been given another stool sample pot to check for other things (inflammation/blood etc) as my last sample was just for infection screening which was negative.

I've got a blood test on Sunday and she said I'll hear from someone next week regarding next steps.

I'm even more worried now but trying to stay positive.

  • Another update.

GP just rang and said they're referring me for an urgent colonoscopy. She said there's a back log so I might have to wait longer than usual (great)

hopefully I'll get the appointment soon

  • [@NorthernStar]‍ Hi Hun, try not to worry, I know hard not to worry, but put it to the back of your head until you go to your colonoscopy. Did your doctor say the lump could be a hemorrhoid by any chance ? Also I'm guessing you fit test came up with blood that is why you've been referred for a colonoscopy? My fit test was positive for 200ug blood. Btw when they say back log, please do ask them exactly how long you are looking at. It usually should be within couple of weeks. I unfortunately almost had to wait a year for my colonoscopy due to the pandemic. Xx

  • [@Sabr]‍  thank you, I'm trying to put it to the back of my mind for now. There's nothing I can do about anything until all the tests are done but I'm a natural worrier .

she said it feels too hard to be a hemoroid but it could be thrombosed (although she said they are very painful and I don't have any pain or itching).

I haven't had a fit test, just a fecal infection test and I've just been given a sample pot for calprotectin levels to be checked.

also have a blood test on Sunday to check inflammation markers and other things (not 100% sure what).

She's referred me for the colonoscopy because of the mass she has felt and my symptoms, she did originally say they would wait for the blood results before referring me but then she rang to say they are putting it in today.

Oh gosh!! I'm so sorry you had to wait that long, I bet that was so worrying for you. She said if I haven't had an appointment in 3 weeks to call the surgery to chase up- so not to bad really considering the length of time you had to wait! X

  • I really do hope you get your appointment through the post. Glad it won't take as long as it use to. Did you ask them if your calaprotectin levels were high? X

  • Thank you.

I've got the pot to do the calprotectin sample but I've not done it yet so hopefully I'll find out next week.
