Positive Fit test with symptoms.

I've always considered myself to be stoic but was terrified to receive a positive result from a FIT test (14.4).  My other blood test results came back normal but I will be fast tracked for a colonoscopy.  Id had an increase in stool frequency which I'd put down to coffee on an empty stomach in the morning but it seems apparently not.  I'm terrified of what may be lurking as I'm a dad with sole parental responsibility for a 6 year old who's entirely dependent on me.  Sorry to be such a worrier as I know there are people on here with far bigger concerns than me with diagnoses in black and white.  As I anxiously wait for the referral of course it makes me much more conscious of my guts (which I know in itself can make things worse). Just terrified of what the diagnosis could be which I know won't help anyone least of all my daughter.

  • Hi Duncan

No need to apologise, it's completely understandable that you're worrying about this. We all understand how hard the waiting can be and I think you're right, the anxiety is probably making your symptoms worse. I know it's not easy, but try and distract yourself during this waiting time. Do something fun with your daughter this weekend if you can, I imagine she keeps you on your toes!

I hope you don't have to wait much longer for the colonoscopy but in the meantime try not to overthink things, not easy I know. Also avoid Google, it doesn't help with the anxiety at all!

Let me know how you get on, here if you need to chat.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear you have to go for tests - it's an anxious time.  However I wanted to give you a something positive!  My partner had an unexpected positive FIT result from NHS screening tests. This led to a colonoscopy, which found a malignant tumour in sigmoid colon. Then a CT showed 'concern' at liver - MRI showed it to be harmless cyst.  Next came surgery to remove tumour. He was told all sorts of 'possibilities' such as stoma, ITU, spread.  Anyways, operation was Robotic, all went well, horrible wait for pathology results, but all thankfully clear. Essentially, it's all been cut out & just need to monitor now!

My point is - you're getting it dealt with now!   It (and remember, it's often just polyps or piles!) could be removed quickly - and they will move quickly, even if it doesn't feel like it!
The waiting is torture, it made us both mentally + physically wrecked.  Please try to stay away from horror stories on internet - remember, good news doesn't attract readers!
You're doing everything right by firstly doing a FIT & secondly following up with further tests.
Hope you get all the results with minimal wait + remember there are many, many positive stories.

    Good luck! Xx

  • Thank you so much it's really helpful.  You're absolutely right on all counts, especially Google.  Until I have the colonoscopy nothing / no-one can tell me the answer I guess everyone wants to hear, that there's nothing of major concern.  Somehow I just have to put it on the list of 'jobs to be done', and get on with doing / planning.  I'll let you know how it goes x

  • Thank you, I'm sorry to hear you've both had to endure such a protracted period of uncertainty but relieved to hear the outcome.  You're absolutely right about dealing with it now being the thing to focus on it.  Thanks so much for sharing x

  • I had my colonoscopy today.  I was terrified of what they might find so opted for the sedative (basically just something that relaxes you).  Anyway, the colonoscopy went well and was clear apart from a small harmless polyp which the surgeon excised.  And that's it.  Days of abject terror dissipated.  What struck me when I was waiting was the huge range in ages and diversity of everyone waiting anxiously for their own news.  Regardless of the outcome, none of us are alone in this.  Big love to anyone worrying right now. Thank you SO much to the volunteers on this forum who do such a great job in support x

  • Really glad your had good news following your colonoscopy! I'm having mine this morning and hoping for an equally positive outcome. This forum is brilliant isn't it.

  • Fingers and toes crossed for you.  The procedure will be over in a flash and you've absolutely done the best thing you could do by going for it (apparently lots of men don't!).  Please let us know how it goes, and while you're in there no that there are people you've never met before, rooting for you,  All the best

  • Thank you for this lovely message! I did read it before I went in, it cheered me up no end.

I've posted on another thread in detail about my experience this morning. Prep went better than expected. Procedure itself was pretty unpleasant and painful despite sedation. But they didn't find any cancer!!! Unfortunately I have to do it all again in 3 months because there was a polyp they weren't able to remove properly today. At least next time I won't be fearing the worst in terms of an outcome...

  • Thrilled to hear your news (I was wondering!), so thanks for sharing.  Yes next time will be more of a hassle than anything else and at least you won't be worried.  All the best to you mate.   ️

  • Thanks pal, really appreciate your kind words!
