Advice please on suspected lung cancer

Hi, so my worry is my mam who is 73 years old and always been fit and healthy. In June this year she went for an X-ray which showed a lung nodule, she has since had a ct scan and most recently a CT pet scan.

the results are that she has an active tumour that looks sinister and that she will have a biopsy within a fortnight.

that is all the doctor at the hospital said, I am just wondering what this means? Do they think she has got lung cancer?

the doctor did not say the word cancer so I don't know if it's still just suspected that she has got cancer or does active tumour that looks sinister mean they know already?

my mam is very scared and keeps asking me if I think it will be ok, I've been saying of course you will but should I not be saying that? Please help

  • Hello Sidjeff and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear that your mam has been told she has an active tumour which looks sinister and that she will have a biopsy soon. Hopefully the biopsy will shed some light on what this is exactly. It's hard to know exactly what this means and whether it is definitely lung cancer as you will need to wait for the biopsy results to come through I think to get the full picture of what is going on. It won't be long now until you find out all the details and we're thinking of you during this difficult time.

I can imagine your poor mam is very scared at the moment and it sounds like you have been truly supportive with her by showing her as well that you are there for her. I will now let our members who have had a similar experience come and say hello and share their story with you.

If you ever wanted to talk things through with our cancer nurses, you are welcome to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie

Thank you so much for your reply.

it would be really good to hear of other peoples similar experiences.

The uncertainty and waiting is taking its toll on my mam now, she's not been sleeping and is convinced she is really ill now, even though she was absolutely fine before the X-ray/scans results etc so I'm not sure how much of it is psychological

Waiting and wondering is awful, she's desperate for anyone to say your fine, you'll be fine, I wish I could but I'm scared because I just don't know.

  • Hello Sidjeff,

Hope you and your mum are well!

Have you found out the results yet?

I am in a very similar situation, my mum was sent for a chest X-ray and then a lung scan and it has come back that there is 2 nodules on her right lung. 1 is 7mm and they are not concerned, however the other is 19mm. She is awaiting a pet scan appointment but was told would be within the next 2 weeks and is booked in for a biopsy a week today.

    Absolutely panicking!

    Mum is 72
