Mole excision wound not healing

Hiya!

Does anyone have any experience with an excision wound not healing very well? It is probably slightly infected and I am going on antibiotics now as it has been five weeks...just panicking as I still haven't received my biopsy results and Dr Google (I know, I know) says one of the causes of wounds not healing is skin cancer eeek.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

I can't say I've ever heard of a wound not healing being caused by skin cancer and I've been a melanoma patient for 26 years!  Please don't look at Dr Google, it just scares everyone and isn't always correct or up to date.

Any surgical wound can become infected. I've had 8 moles removed (one was melanoma) and 2 (not melanoma) became infected, needing antibiotics. It's good that you have antibiotics. Keep an eye on it and If you aren't happy it's healing seek help again.

Results appear to be taking 6 to 8 weeks at the moment so try not to stress out. Hopefully you will hear from them soon. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you again Angie, I really appreciate your reply. I will try not to worry too much. It is frustrating that it is taking so long to wait for results, your mind just runs away with your thoughts it seems! I am seeing a nurse for wound care and I will take the antibiotics, I was hoping to avoid it as I am breastfeeding my newborn but they are supposed to be fine so will just do what the doctor said. Infections are frustrating, I think it would be easier to think about something else if it had healed by now. But the wound is on my boob and I see it everytime i feed my baby... hopefully I am closer to the 6 week wait than the 8th. Yikes
