Aching breast, breast clinic appt Friday. Anyone had this?

Hi, just looking for some advice / your experiences with early symptoms.
I have an appointment at the breast clinic on Friday due to a lump and also a spot/blister that has been on my breast for a few months and never healed.

What I'm asking for may seem a bit bizarre, but everyone around me is 100% convinced that I won't have breast cancer as they feel my symptoms are categorically not BC related and I get the impression they feel I am wasting an appointment. I feel like I'm potentially  in for a huge shock unless I balance things out!

Did anyone have an aching breast with BC and/or an ache towards collar bone and upper arm?when I touch all the area there is no pain, im just aware of it all of that makes sense and it's definitely achy. Anyone had this?

  • Hi Vic,

I just came across your post and wanted to wish you all the best for Friday and reassure you that you are not wasting an appointment. Breast lumps need to be checked and if needed, referred for further investigation. With breast specialists looking at the lump, you can get answers and peace of mind.

I'm sure some of our members will let you know what symptoms they experienced soon but if you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions.

We also have some information about breast cancer symptoms on our website.

We're thinking of you Vic and will have our fingers crossed for good news.

    All the best,

  • Thank you. Been particularly achy today. Feels like I have to press my breast towards myself, but when I feel it there are no actual areas that are painful. This is going to sound so strange, but it feels almost like trapped wind pain in my boob! But it's only fleeting!area towards armpit feels swollen and also having slight discomfort towards collarbone at the same time as nipple twinges. But again when I poke and prod around nothing feels sore. Vic xx

  • Hi Vic

I've recently had similar symptoms to those you describe. I had a lump, a rash, my breast felt really heavy and I had pain spreading upwards towards my collarbone, the top of my arm and back. Mine turned out to be due to an infection. Apparently the lump was actually inflammation and the pain away from the breast was due to the irritation of the nerves in those areas. I've got to keep an eye on things, but the past few days it's suddenly starting to feel a lot better and the pain is now subsidingHope all goes well for you Friday, please let me know how you get on. Here in the meantime if you need a chat, I know the waiting and worry isn't easy. Debs x

  • Hi Debs,

Glad to hear your appointment went well! Hope you're feeling ok now. Did you have a lump with this too? Vic x

  • Hi Vic

I initially went to the GP with a red rash that I thought was an infected insect bite. He found the lump and actually told me he suspected breast cancer, which was quite a shock! It wasn't my usual GP and he was quite blunt...
When I went to the clinic they said it wasn't a lump as such, but inflammation from an infection. My mammogram and ultrasound were both clear. If I'm honest, I'm still a bit uneasy, but my usual GP has reassured me that if they were at all concerned they would've done more tests. The pain is subsiding and so I'm feeling a little less anxious each day. I've previously had cancer, so that hasn't helped, your mind works overtime!

  • Due to the amount of people that pass through here, you could post any symptom and someone will have had it whether it be good or bad news.

BC doesn't tend to be sore, but my wife first noticed hers due to the pain. It was pressing on a nerve. Only 1/8 lumps turn out to be breast cancer, so there's that too. But there's no need to balance things out. It's good that you're not crawling the walls with worry. So don't be too hard on yourself. It's good you're feeling positive. If you could bottle that attitude, you'd make millions.

  • I can understand why you feel uneasy. Give it a little time and if you're not happy then go back to your GP and request further tests. Hopefully it will all subside fully soon. Vic x

  • Thanks for your reply. I am really sorry to hear about your wife.

I feel like I'm too far the other way like I'm relaxed about it and fully expecting it to be nothing! But there's no point getting myself worked up about something that is basically 50/50. Time will tell and luckily I don't have long to wait now. Vic x

  • You're where everyone wants to be. This can be one of the worst times mentally for some, so you being too relaxed is good. There is absolutely no downside to feeling this way.

Our initial journey mentally was very similar. My wife was relaxed, which meant we could focus on more positive stuff and actually sleep at night. Even her diagnosis day was surreal. We walked out of the place like we had just been told she had broken a fingernail. It was really bizarre and surreal looking back on it. But we were always in a calm place. That was purely down to both the doctors and nurses that put us at ease from the off. I can't champion them enough.

There is no right or wrong way to approach this. Seriously, there is no point just freaking yourself out for the sake of freaking yourself out. It won't change anything other than give you palpitations.
