Fingernail

Hi all, this is my first time posting on here. I have had a brown vertical stripe on my finger for around a year now, well that's when I sort of noticed it anyway. I haven't really done anything about it and thought it would go away itself, it hasn't and it has got slightly darker. Went to my GP today and she has referred me to a dermatologist on a rushed 2 week referral. ( although they are behind and we are looking at more 4 weeks) I'm worried I have Subungual melanoma. I have had so much go on with my health recently that I haven't even told my husband or any of my family. Just need a bit of reassurance.

  • Hello Kels85 and welcome to the forum.

I'm very sorry for the worry this is causing but it's good you've seen your GP and have been referred for further investigation. I know it must have been scary to be given a 2 week referral but I hope it helps to know that more than 9 out of every 10 people (more than 90%) who are referred this way will not be diagnosed with cancer. You can find out more just here.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their support to you soon but in the meantime, we're thinking of you and hope everything will be o.k.

If you'd like to discuss this further with one of our nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you are going through this anxious time but it's good that you've been referred to dermatology for it checking out.

Subungual melanoma is quite rare, only about 4% of melanoma patients have this type of melanoma. Hopefully yours will be fine but don't panic if they say a biopsy is necessary - this is the only way to give a definitive diagnosis.

There are a couple of threads on the forum from last year from subungal patients. If you want to read their experiences search in the toolbar at the top of the page. Meanwhile, good luck and please let us know how you get on.
