Smear test abnormal cells and hpv

Hello, I had my first smear test 3 weeks ago, during the smear test I actually bled quite abit (while it was being done not after) that sent me into a bit of a panic mode because of the nurses face when she said it. But now I'm in full panic mode as today I got my results back and I am positive for HPV and have low grade dyskaryosis. I know it doesn't mean cancer and it's the lowest grade but I'm worried still as I've had really irregular bleeding for the last 6 months or so, some months it would be like 3 full periods within the space of 28 days.

I have been referred for a colposcopy how long will I wait untill the appointment?  Does it hurt?

Argh my mind can't stop, it's on overdrive!

  • Try not to worry. I know that's easier said than done. I went through similar this time last year. I got myself really worked up. What I didn't know/realise is how common it is to need a follow up colposcopy appointment following a smear test. I was sent an appointment date for a few weeks time. It came through quicker than they had anticipated. I was seen by a few lovely female nhs staff, I had four in my first appointment. One was there literally to comfort me, hold my hand if I was nervous etc. my first appointment they just did a biopsy. It wasn't painful, just a bit uncomfortable really. Not much different to a smear really although I've never bleed in a smear like yourself. My biopsy confirmed my original results and the dr at the appointment said it also looked low grade. 1 or 2. I got those results through pretty quickly and then was sent a follow up appointment. At this appointment I was given my treatment options. Due to the low grade (n1) treatment was optional (I could of just had more routine smears to keep a close eye) I choose to have the electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) done. This was done at my appointment. I was really nervous but they were really lovely and reassuring. This again was fine (given anaesthetic) although I had some bleeding, this is normal. The thought of it was worse than what was done if that makes sense. The worst for me I think is just because of where the procedure had to be done.  Within about two months it was all done though. A follow up smear after six months showed all was normal and the treatment worked.
I think now that they test for HPV they catch these abnormalities a lot sooner therefore the risks of it being really serious are very low. When being open and talking to my friends/family I only then realised how many people I knew or a friend of a friend that had had the same treatment (5). It's honestly a lot more common than I thought and had I known this first think I'd have been a little less worried.
I really hope this helps. Hopefully you'll get an appointment through quickly. Honestly at the time my mind was all over the place, you can't help but worry. The staff that I saw though were all wonderful, they do these appointments several times a day, every day. I was also really fortunate that my appointments came through quickly however at the time waiting two/three weeks felt like eternity! Sending hugs xx
