The waiting game

Hi all, I'm new to the forums but have been looking for similar stories on signs and symptoms.

I have a 3-4cm hard lump in my right groin. I've been to the GP and she treated me with penicillin and referred me in for a U/S. This was last week, I don't yet have the scan date. On top of this I am a little nauseus, have a decreased appetitte (both I'm thinking is stress related), and I get terrible night sweats. Wet from head to toe type sweats. I'm not sure if I'm right to worry yet, but I can't help thinking it's going to be bad news.

Added to this wonderful stress, they withdrew treatment for my terminal dad last night. He has mesilthelioma, and now has a tumor in his lung, so the treatment isn't helping. They've put him on End of Life pathway now.

How do people cope with this sort of emotional stress?

  • Hello Carrot22 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am so sorry to hear that they withdrew treatment for your terminal dad last night and that the treatment isn't helping. This is a really sad time for you and we are thinking of you as you are going through all this whilst having to also deal with the uncertainty of what is causing this hard lump on your right groin.

I hope you won't have to wait too long for your ultrasound scan and then to have the results. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to find out more. It might be worth mentioning these symptoms you mentioned to your GP and do mention that you are taking penicillin at the moment in case the nausea is a reaction to the antibiotics you are taking for example. Make sure you flag all the other issues too such as the night sweats if you haven't done so already.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. The waiting game you describe is something many of our members will be familiar with and which can be the hardest thing to deal with but there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope with waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
