Referred for an ultrasound. Should I be worried?

Hi all.

I found a lump on the left side of my neck (just under my ear lobe) last year. I went to the doctor and she wasn't concerned, that was that and I was made to feel I was worrying over nothing. It is still there now and has grown in size and a lot easier to feel than it was before. It is a hard lump that doesn't move and aches after I've been feeling it. I also have a few little rubbery ones on the back of my neck which I can sometimes feel when I move my neck. I've experienced night sweats but not consistently. Has anyone else experienced night sweats? We're yours consistent?
I saw a doctor today who was more interested and has referred me for an ultrasound. Can someone inform me what happens during the ultrasound? Will they tell me there and then if there is something to worry about?
I am trying to think positive but I am really worried.

Thank you in advance, Beth. :-)

  • Hi Beth,

I also have a lump on my neck under my ear, I have had mine for around 5 weeks. I also have an ultrasound booked on Friday, I'm interested in others replies of what will happen at the ultrasound etc

  • This may not be the same thing as it was a thyroid nodule that I was having an ultrasound on, but no, they didn't say anything at the time. They sent the results to my GP who I had an appointment with a week later and even that didn't tell much. Just yeah, you do need a biopsy, but the odds are still very much in favour of it being benign.

  • Hi.
How long did your appointment take to come through for the ultrasound? I hate the waiting game!

  • I had first appointment on 26th, blood tests on 27th and ultrasound letter came on 30th. Appointment is 7th so quite quickly really! I hate waiting too I can't stop thinking about it and googling etc which I know is making my anxiety worse! I hope you get your appointment letter soon.

  • Hi, I had a lump in my neck just behind my ear, and went to my gp terrified. In fact I still have it! It's been there for 15 years and hasn't changed from being like a pea, and it feels hard. I was referred to a specialist and he gave me an ultrasound and put a very thin camera on a  super thin wire up my nose and down through my mouth which sounds awful, but it really wasn't and it lasted literally 30 seconds. No biopsy was done, he'd seen all he needed to before he diagnosed it as a blocked follicle, which are apparently,  quite common. So chances are that yours could be the same thing, but yes, always have any new lump or bump checked out if it's been there a couple of weeks. That's what my gp always says anyway!

    All best wishes! X

  • Not too long at all then, hopefully I receive a letter soon!
Good luck with your appointment today. Hope you receive positive news ASAP.

  • Hi, I had my ultrasound this morning, unfortunately don't know anything else they just took lots of pictures of it and told me my Gp would be in contact and probably book a biopsy. I feel like if it was nothing to worry about they would of told me so I'm even more anxious than I was to begin with
