Lump in neck

Hi, just looking for some advice/reassurance. I've had a lump in my neck just under my jaw line below my ear for 5 weeks. I've seen the doctor, had blood tests and I'm having a ultrasound on Friday. The lump is around 5cm in size, it isn't painful either. I first thought swollen gland but I haven't been unwell? I'm getting more worried now that it might be cancer after Googling. I'm 28 female, mum of 2. Has anyone had something similar and turned out to be normal? Thanks

  • Hi, I'm sorry your going through this you are not alone. I made a GP app to discuss my facial asymmetry ( very vein I have body image issues). She saw it straight away. Her and I are very close and I told her of the swelling in my neck I thought it was my face dropping. She gave me the once over felt the swelling and discovered a lump. She asked me how long I had had it and I didn't know. It's small painless and not movable. She mentioned thyroid and has ordered bloods and a scan for ASAP. I went on a diet at the beginning of last year and I'd lost a few stone now I have difficulty putting it back on. Over the past few days my voice is hoarse. Like you I don't feel unwell either, I do get tired but I have meds for epilepsy which can do that. If it was a swollen gland the doc would know that. Im mid 30 single 2 kids. Now im scared I've not told anyone, now I couldn't if I wanted to as I can barely speak when I try to I sound like im shouting like a ghost with a sore throat. I feel very selfish writing on here as I know it may be nothing. I was denied antibiotics so it's not an infection. You are not alone, also if you have the same issue as me with your voice how do you see your GP to report new symptoms? All my hope x

  • I'm sorry to hear you that you're also going through this, I hope your bloods and scan appointment are soon! The waiting is the worst part for me. Try to stay positive that it is a small lump, my lump is quite large which is what is worrying me more that I might of missed it or that it has grown quickly/aggressive. I was also not given any antibiotics etc so don't think it is in infection as I am well in myself. Let me know updates x

  • Hope all is ok  for you my lump is large top at base of neck

  • She makes me feel so relaxed I've had personal and medical issues and I've seen her since I was 19. After she said about the lump she described it a bit and said bloods and scan I think it's an ultra sound . Then we continued as normal. I have trust issues and I speak to her when my MH is bad. Why would she order bloods and tests straight away for a small lump ?? Surely she would know the difference between inflamed fatty or something more sinister ? If she thought it was anything bad surely she would say and what are the blood tests for? Sorry for harping on. If it's small why bother ? Xx

  • Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I hope you're doing ok! I think I would of declined the antibiotics also if they aren't sore etc. how are you feeling about waiting 4-6 weeks? X

  • Hi! How are you doing now? Have you had any updates on scan etc? X

  • Hi everyone, just wanted to add my update I haven't been on here for a few days as I've been really anxious. Today my GP rang me and explained that the ultrasound showed I had enlarged gland on left side of my neck measuring 6.5cm which is the lump I can see/feel and they also found a few nodules on the left side of my thyroid. I've been referred to ear nose and throat now for a needle biopsy so I have to wait for a letter from them to come through with an appointment. A family member of mine had thyroid cancer in lockdown and it sounds quite similar to her symptoms so im worried it's the same. I guess I will just have to keep on waiting and find out more after the biopsy. X

  • Hope all is ok paigerlina was the lump at side or base of your neck and was it hard  dunno if I asked you previously  I'm very anxious too as I have appointment next week  for a lump in neck... sending best wishes  x

  • The lump I have is at the side of my neck, just below my jawline  in line with my ear lobe which I now know is a gland which is swollen. I know the thyroid is at the front lower down and there are some kind of lumps on the left hand side of that too but I can't feel those from the outside so I think they are much smaller. I hope your appointment goes ok, let us know how you get on x

  • Yes I will do ... is the lymph hard to touch or soft x
