What is Micro-calcifications cluster??

Hi there

I'm new to this, I've read lots of posts over the last few days. Lots of concerned and anxious people, like me reaching out for your support. I had a annual mammogram on 22/09 and recalled. Further appointment on 30/09, I was informed that I have calcifications in my left breast, after further images were taken I was informed vacuum assisted biopsy was required. I had the biopsy on 03/10. I was informed the calcifications are 2mm in size. Based on the information I have read, I believe they known as microcalcifications and due the size and only in the one breast this is suspicious. Can any advise, have they experienced something similar?? What treatment will be required?? Lots of mention about DCIS, is this cancer??  I'm 50 in January and terrified of the outcome. I have an appointment on 14/10!! The anxiety is horrendous.

  • Hi Susie,

Sorry that you find yourself here - the waiting is so stressful, but I hope you find some support and reassurance on this forum.

I can only comment on my own experience, but am sure there are many who have had calcifications that proved to be benign.

Following some symptoms I had a mammogram and ultrasound in January where microcalcifications were found in my left breast - I then had a stereotactic biopsy - two week wait for results which I think is fairly standard, and was diagnosed with DCIS.

DCIS is considered early stage non-invasive breast cancer - it means that the cancer cells are contained within the milk ducts and has not spread outside of the ducts.

DCIS is graded as low, intermediate, or high grade, and depending on this will likely affect any treatment plan.

Mine was initially graded as intermediate but following lumpectomy to remove it, the pathology upgraded it to high grade. I then had five sessions of radiotherapy - I think this was because it was high grade (not 100% sure but don't think they do radiotherapy for low/intermediate).

I know the anxiety is horrible - and the waiting is the worst part - once you know what you are dealing with, good or bad, it feels much more mangaeable.

I hope that my experience helps - and wish you all the best for your results on the 14th.

    Look after yourself x

  • Thank you for your kind words and support. I hope you are recovering well.
Were you informed of the size/ cluster?? If the outcome is BC is this automatically DCIS?? Are you aware of negative results after all the investigations and biopsies??

    sorry to ask silly questions!!
    thank you

  • Hi Susie,

    Not silly questions at all!

I can't recall the size of the original calcifications but the DCIS removed was 43mm x 22mm so biggish!

Not all BC is DCIS - like I said DCIS is the very earliest stage and from what I gather is more commonly identified from calcifications rather than necessraily having a lump as such. Breast cancer that is invasive (IDC - Invasive Ductal Carcinoma) is different from DCIS and would likely have a different approach to treatment, possibly including chemo depending on grade and oncotype - so many abbreviations and terminology that you get the hang of!! Hoping you won't have to!

I have read of others who have had negative results - I know it's hard not to jump to the worst conclusions. I had convinced myself I had DCIS which in some ways was a good thing for me as I felt prepared for the news. Having said that I had worrying symptoms prior to my mammogram so always felt there was something not quite right!

    Hang in there! X

  • Thank you, to understand what the outcome could be, I'm reading lots of literature, bizarre I know. However I'm looking at every potential outcome and preparing myself for the worst!!
The wait is horrendous, I've just received a reminder for my appointment, 10 days to wait!! For clarification could the outcomes be one of the following.

    1) Benign, no treatment required.
    2) DCIS, lumpectomy

    3) Eatly stage of BC, not sure what treatment is required.
sorry, I know, I'm jumping all over the place and probably not making any sense!!

  • I was the same - knowledge is power as they say! I would say that is a reasonable summary of possible outcomes - let's hope it's numner 1.

I can only speak from my own experience though so I'm no expert haha!

    Take care.

  • After a long wait from biopsy taken on 03/10 results day today. Feeling anxious, however I just need to know what the outcome is.

please send lots of positive vibes. I will keep you posted.

  • Wishing you all the best and definitely sending positive vibes - keeping everything crossed for you.
