Lump in thigh....

Hi all,

I've been building up the courage to post.

I recently found a painless lump on the back of my thigh, roughly a month ago. I left it a week and then decided to get my GP to take a look when having a routine appointment. She said she struggled to see it but could feel it, and her instincts were telling her it was just a fatty lump but she felt some resistance when trying to move it so said she would refer me for an ultrasound.

Its now been about 2-3 weeks since my appointment and the lump has grown considerably to about 6cm by 6cm and it feels harder. It's starting to ache a bit.

I've been going out of my mind with worry as until googling (yes I know I probably shouldn't have) there's been a few other symptoms I have that I hadn't paid much attention to until now.

For the past several months I've had super intense itching on the backs of both thighs that just doesn't stop and general itching. During the night I'm getting sweaty, and my pillow feels like I've spilled water on it. My lymph nodes have been slightly swollen for a long time too, a different GP said last year they were slightly enlarged but she put it down to the infections I kept getting.

I've been suffering with breathlessness for the last few weeks also which the docs can't seem to figure out why. Most recently just this week my lymph nodes have really started to ache too and feel really tender especially in my neck, underarms and groin.

Im trying to be logical about it all but I'm really getting worried. I've been feeling generally unwell for about a month with no obvious cause and now I'm wondering if everything is linked!

My ultrasound is on the 6th October, I'm really hoping it's all coindence.

Has anyone experienced anything similar and what was the outcome?

  • Hello Janwise,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat!

Only a few days to wait now before your ultrasound on the 6th of October and hopefully soon you will get some definite answers and understand better what is causing these issues. You did well to get this lump on your thigh checked up and it's good your GP was thorough and referred you. You're absolutely right that Googling will often only create more anxiety so try not to believe what Google might say to you as it's unlikely it will get things right as only a medical expert will be able to diagnose you properly.

It's important though to get these additional symptoms like the itching, the breathlessness or the swollen lymph nodes looked at which you have done. It's hard to know whether any of this is linked but you are doing the right thing in flagging everything with your doctor and I am sure that they will be able to tell you more once they have had all your test results.

Everything crossed for your ultrasound in a few days' time. Waiting for results can be truly nerve-racking and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I will now let our other members who have experienced something similar come and say hello and share their story with you and I hope that you will hear from others who have been in a similar position before.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi,

I have come on here to look at some similar chats to this. I have a lump on my left calf muscle and its painless and i have already had an ultrasound and got told it was "muscle inflammtion" but the pains in my leg and knee havent stopped and if anything they have gotten worse but i cannot, for the life of me, pin point where the pains are located, it feels like my bones but im not sure. and today, my left knee hurts to walk.

Id love to hear how your appointment goes and if you find any answers because it is so hard waiting to speak to someone it leaves you wondering and googling. I havent been myself at all since i found this lump i have diagnosed myself with so many things its unbelievable.

I hope your appointment goes well and i hope you get the answers you want to ease your mind.

  • Thank you Lucie!

I'm hoping come tomorrow my mind will be put at ease.

  • Hi Kim!

Im sorry you've been experiencing similar and are still in pain. What did the GP advise after the ultrasound results? If you're still feeling unsure it won't hurt to ask for a second opinion.

How big is your lump if you don't mind me asking? Mine has got bigger even since I posted this so I'm going crazy.

I 100% understand how you feel regarding the googling and worrying. Unfortunately as soon as you Google a lump all the results all mention sarcoma and it drives you crazy. I've been non stop reading forums and research etc since finding the lump and although I am trying to be logical I am thinking the worst.

My appointment is at 9:20am so nice and early. I am hoping I'll get a radiographer who will be able to at least tell me if the lump is likely to be a cyst or fatty lump or if I should be concerned so hopefully I will have some answers to share with you.

    Take care x

  • Hi,

thank you for your quick response... I can't tell an exact size of the lump but it is like more flat than round if that makes sense... but it has felt harder in the last few days, it's not like a marble it's more like a flat mass I can't describe it though!!

i did speak to my GP and they have referred me to a rheumatologist and a musculoskeletal specialist to check my body out to check for different things. They have tried to   Diagnose me with fibromyalgia but that doesn't really explain the lump. I am really glad they have referred me but I'd have preferred an X-ray just ti make sure it's nothing bad but I appreciate all GPs and doctors who try to help but as I am young I feel like I'm dismissed a lot.

I really hope you find your answers so you don't continue to worry, I hope there's nothing wrong with either of us but any answers will ease our mind and stop the pain of worrying and panic every single day with any other new symptoms to kick the anxiety back off , it is really hard to deal with every day and does affect physical and mental health a lot!!

I really hope you are okay and get the answers you need to ease your mind and feel better in yourself.

keep us all updated , I'll be rooting for you xx

  • Hi,

It's good you've been referred to people who can help. Hopefully you'll get answers soon. It's always horrible waiting for answers.

I got great results at my ultrasound, he said he can feel the lump but can't see anything that could be causing it on the scan so he feels it's just a lipoma (a fatty lump) and should be nothing to be worried about. He said he will write the report to my GP and it should be with them in a week.

I feel so relieved to know it's nothing serious.

Hope things go well for you x

  • Hi,

im so sorry I've only just seen this!

I got the same news but called it muscle inflammation, I'm sure it should've gone by now but it hasn't! And I'm still getting pains all in my leg so I'm having the call with the specialist on Friday of this week and hopefully they can find out some more things to ease my mind as to why I'm in pain every single day.

I see many stories of people being misdiagnosed and I won't allow myself to be one of them, if there is anything wrong I want a definite diagnosis and not "it could be..." because that plays with my mind and it's even worse with health anxiety.

at least you have nothing to worry about and hopefully not causing you any pains or anything! I just hope I'm not dismissed again with these awful pains , it's impacting my mental health a lot too unfortunately! I hope all goes well and I'm so happy to hear it's nothing to worry about you must feel so relieved x
