Could be waiting months for ultrasound

Hi there

I recently posted how distressed I was with my mums symptoms (lost 18lbs in 7 months, lower pelvic pain, bloating all on and off for the last few months)  and after a doctors appointment she has been referred to get a transvaginal ultrasound but not as urgent so could be months away. It is intensely worrying as the doctor believes the pain is coming from the ovary and we can't understand why it is not being treated as more urgent.

My mum was feeling extra  uncomfortable on the weekend so we went into boots and bought some Buscopan. She's been taking that since and says the pain is not there as much now and the bloating has gone down.

is this a good sign? If she had ovarian cancer would the pain and bloating still have persisted with the Buscopan? I know this is quite vague but in my anxiety ridden head I'm convinced I'm loosing my mum and trying to grab onto any straws I can to have some other possibilities.

kind regards Nina

  • Hello Niina1991

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum is dealing with some health problems at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

It's good to hear that she has been referred for some further tests. If your Mum is worried about why she has been referred for a routine appointment then she can always call the surgery to ask for more information and some reassurance from the GP.

I can see from your other post that you've been searching the internet for information. We know that many people turn to the internet when they or a loved one has health concerns. Unfortunately what most often happens is that you don't find firm answers and instead are left feeling even more worried and concerned. I know that waiting for tests and answers can be a difficult time but try to avoid searching online for answers if you can.

If you'd like to speak with one of our nurses for some support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I do hope that your Mum has some news soon and that things start to improve for her.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jen thank you,

I just don't understand why they haven't done the ca125(?) test or anything else everyone else seems to have. She has called them and they are just saying they have a lot of people on the list. I have never seen her look so frail and unwell before though

  • Hi Niina!
I'm 46 and has also experienced same symptoms as your mum ie bloating, pelvic pain. When I went to the GP to ask for a scan, she told me she can't because blood test has to be done first before a referral for a scan can be made. I did my blood test and that included ca125 which came back raised. The GP referred me for an "urgent" scan which I am still waiting for and for 2ww gynaecology. She said the ca125 does not necessarily mean ovarian cancer but it raises "concern". Maybe you can call your mum's GP and ask for blood test so she can be seen urgently if her ca125 is raised which of course we would rather be normal.
    Hope that helps.

  • If your mam is in pain I would definitely get back in touch with the Docs she should not have to struggle through and as someone has suggested ask for a CA 125 blood test if its not elevated that's a very good sign ,if it is it should spur them on to get her an appointment quicker x

  • Thank you, I don't think they will speak to me as I've tried before and been told I am not registered to speak on her behalf. She's told me she has asked for the CA125 and they have told her it's not necessary and I have no clue why as she doesn't just have one red flag symptom but THREE x

  • Hi sms,

I am sorry to hear you are going through this stressful time and I hope you get the results your hoping for. They haven't done anything for my mum yet apart from

put her on a waiting list I want them to do the ca125 but she's been told unnecessary for some reason

  • Hi an update:

after much persuading I convinced my mum to talk to her doctor again. She went in and had an internal exam (they didn't find any lumps or bumps) and she asked to get the ca125 which they have booked her for Thursday. They also said her pelvic floor is low/dropped so prescribed her Estradiol tablets. Could a dropped pelvic floor possibly cause some of her symptoms? Everything seems a bit vague.

    thanks Nina xx
