Mole Biopsy Results

Hi all,

This is my first time posting but I've been anxiously lurking for a few weeks now reading others experiences after being referred to Dermatology for a suspicious looking mole. Both the GP and Consultant Dermatologist were not happy with a new mole that appeared on my back which fits all of the ABCDE criteria for melanoma. I had the excisional biopsy 3 weeks ago and have today received a letter for a face to face appointment for results and skin surveillance.

Does this mean my results have confirmed something suspicious or should I see this as a positive sign? My appointment is on 11th October.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

I'm afraid you can't assume anything from this appointment letter. Some consultants like to give results face to face, whether good or bad. They also want to check your skin for any other worrying moles. Chances are that they want to do this because your mole was either cancerous or it was dysplastic (precancerous). If the latter, that's good because it's been caught before it's turned cancerous but it means you need to keep a vigilant eye on any other moles you have.

Sorry I couldn't give you a precise idea of what is happening. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you Angie.

Think I'm just extra anxious because I was told the current wait for results was 6-8 weeks and mine have come back after 3 weeks. Your mind instantly just jumps to the worst case scenario doesn't it? I feel like I've been a bag of nerves since my initial GP appointment.

  • Hi Amyw1988 I've come across your post doing the usual googling as I have found myself in the same position as you I got my mole removed and have recieved a letter to attend hosp app for follow up results in 2 weeks which will also be 3 weeks - I am so scared of what they are going to tell me - how did your appointment go ? I hope you are doing well x

  • Hi,

My results appointment was with the Skin Cancer Specialist Nurse and she told me that my results came back showing melanoma in situ. I've got to have a further wide local excision to remove a bigger margin of skin from the original site and then hopefully that will come back clear and the melanoma will be officially gone. While I was there, she did a full head to toe skin check of all my other moles too and advised things to look out for. I've just got one other mole that she wants me to keep a close eye on (Consultant came in for a second opionion). Part of me wished they would just remove it because ever since, my anxiety has been through the roof!

Sending all the positive vibes to you for your appointment!

    Xx

  • Hi , thank you so much for replying ! im sorry you have to have further tissue removed and I wish you all the best that it then comes back all clear !

im glad in the meantime they have done a head to toe check on you and keeping an eye on the rest of your moles I'm in a similar situation with more than 100 it's almost impossible to keep an eye on them all now! Hopefully if they're keeping a close eye on that other one any even minor changes they will then just remove it !

Thanks again for your reply & I'll keep you updated on my results - let me know how you get on with your second op x
