Failed colonoscopy

Hope someone could help me.i had colonscopy yesterday.the sedation didnt work and I cried in pain.it was just so painful so they had to stop. I didnt realise it will be that bad.i had endoscopy last year, which wasnt as bad as this. They will now send me for ct virtual scan of bowel.can anyone who has had that tell me is it as bad as the colonoscopy.im dreading it.i just let myself down as I wanted answers on my symptoms

  • I have had the ct scan colonoscopy the bowel prep is the worst bit. The scan involves an injection the back of your hand that makes you feel as if you have peed yourself, you don't it just feels like it. No discomfort in the bowel at all so pain free .They found bilateral ovarian cysts  on my scan that they have removed. I hope that helps to relax you at the thought of your next scan.
    take care

  • Thankyou susie for replying.hope your cysts were benign. The scan you had is that the virtual one? Did they put camera up you like the colonscopy? Sounds like your scan was def pain free x

  • Hi Mandy, it's no where near as bad as a colonoscopy.  I'm a right wuss when it comes to hospitals and I found it very bearable.  The prep is the worst bit, you might get a bit of cramping from the air they have to inflate the colon with but it is honestly ok.  The dye makes you think your having a wee but your not.  The experience is so much better than the colonoscopy.  Hope everything turns out well for you

    take care x

  • Mandy-k,

fear not, a CT scan does not involve any internal insertions. It involves lying upon a movable bed that passes through a  tall but narrow diameter ring that houses a scanner, imagine one that you would pass through at an airport and you are almost there. A dye is inserted into your vein through a small needle immediatley before the scan, that enables the scanner to pick up internal images in real time. You will feel a slight warm sensation as it goes in for a minute or two before it subsides to nothing.

It is a piece of cake compared to a invasive colonoscopy and is really nothing to feel overly concerned with.  l am well into double figures with these over the years and for the twenty minutes it takes from start to finish l regard as a rest break before l continue on where l left off. Hope the scan delivers a positive but non cancer diagnosis for you and you are able to move on with any treatment ,

                                                                                                                                 Take care,

                                                                                                                                                     David

  • Thankyou.i feel reasured.hopefully il sail through it.

  • Thankyou David, I do feel reassured. Hoping the scan appointment comes quick and I get answers

  • This happened to me this morning. The pain was unbearable, so I too will be referred for a CT scan. I have had one of those before and it's a walk in the park compared to what I just went through earlier. Although I have been told no cancer was detected with the colonoscopy, I will be happier once I have the CT scan.

  • Fortunately the cysts were benign the operation was a bit difficult due to multiple adhesions the surgeon stuck with it spending over 4 1/2 hrs clearing them. It took a while to get back to normal. You may feel the air when they inflate your bowel but it was not uncomfortable. Much easier than the other colonoscopy. My doctor said they are now locally doing most of the colonoscopy scans by ct. lt seems to be making the list shorter as l was seen within ten days.
