Terrified

Hi there.

Im posting in advance of an appointment at the oral surgery/maxillofacial dept on Tuesday.

About 5 weeks ago now I noticed a gross fleshy -thing- looks like raw flesh - on the very back of my mouth .literally where the teeth end the the throat begins. I arranged an appt with my dentist after a week or so as it wasn't going away.

She then found white growths on my tongue in that area too. Only found them because of poking around the very back of my mouth.

Got a 14 day referral but letter didn't get to them for a while week!

I'm sick with nerves. I are in the last two years lost all my teeth on lower right side (where growth is)

I'm always hoarse and my throat is always sore. My glands are always up and I get a lot of earache and faceache. All on that side. I eat mostly soft food as eat mostly veg with just some meat. Last week choked on my food like it was utterly stuck and honestly thought I was going to choke!

When I see them on Tuesday what will happen?? Can they tell straightaway what it is? I'm so scared

Thanks all x

  • Hello MrsHM

I'm sorry to hear about your recent health concerns. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about your appointment tomorrow and I think many of our members here will be able to identify with that fear and anxiety.

Hopefully when you attend the appointment tomorrow, the team will be able to give you some indication of what they think may be the cause of your symptoms. Very occasionally, the consultant can offer a diagnosis at the first appointment but most typically wait for the results of any tests and biopsy that may be needed before confirming things. It may be that the team will ask to do a nasendoscopy at the appointment tomorrow but if they need further tests it's likely that you may have those arranged for another date.

Whatever happens at your appointment tomorrow know that we're here to support you. If - and at this stage, it is still if - you are diagnosed with oral cancer, we have quite a few members here on the forum who have successfully been through treatment for oral cancers. I know that they will be happy to share their words of support and advice if needed.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Keep in touch MrsHM and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
