Possible Fibroadenoma delayed referral

I have a large lump in my right breast. Has all the signs of being a Fibroadenoma except that it hurts. It's tender to the touch and I am having sharp pains sporadically.

I saw my GP earlier this week and while she thinks it is a Fibroadenoma, she still wants to refer me to the breast clinic for more checks, but apparently i have to wait until after my next period. That's probably going to be another 3 weeks before I will even get a referral and then however long I have to wait for an appointment.

Is this kind of delay normal? I'm nervous that hey are leaving me too long to confirm it's harmless.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Hi nixie

I have seen lots of threads on here for fibroadenoma

if you scroll through posts the last few weeks you would find them hun lots about it hopefully these guys will be of help to you xx

  • Hi hun I just wanted to reach out and say I know the anxious feeling you're going through. I don't have any extra advice or support as my doctor didn't tell me to wait until after my next period as I dont get them anymore as on the contraceptive injection. I've been experiencing discomfort for around 10 weeks now and got my referral appointment yesterday for the 7th of October for the breast clinic which will be 3.5 weeks after my initial gp appointment.
i have multiple lumps in both breasts the biggest being around 2cm although I think it could be getting slightly bigger.

Here's to hoping we both get good investigations and the results we are after I am here if you want to buddy up and discuss our joint anxiety about the situation! X

  • Thanks so much for the reply. I honestly had no idea how long these things usually take to get referred and looked into so the uncertainty was causing me anxiety. Glad to hear that it's normal to take a few weeks to be seen.

My lump is the only one I can see so far. It's pretty big though 3-4cm maybe and completely spherical. So bizarre that it is this big and just appeared suddenly. Its still really painful and it's causing some major discomfort at nights trying to sleep. I really hope that's that's good sign though. I know absolutely nothing about Fibroadenomas, had never heard of them before this and I'm finding it hard to be patient and not keep bugging my gp to see me again!!

Good luck with your appointment, let me know how it goes xx
