Stool colour

I know this may be a bit graphic, but I've had bright red blood on toilet paper for years and when I've told doctors they've done a blood test and a stool sample and everything has come back okay. But I have really noticed that my stool is brown but it has spots of dark brown in it and I was just wondering if anyone knows if that is something some people get. Every time I ring doctors they always just end up doing the same tests and I can't get anywhere past the blood test and stool sample. I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Abbie,

l am picking up on those dark spots in your stool and question if they could be stale blood.Way to check is to catch stool sample in tissue, and smear the  spots with toilet paper where if it is blood that would show up dark red.on the tissue

My stools looked like plum duff with the dark spots like raisins, l realised what it was and immediatly headed to the docs for a colonoscopy and in my case was diagnosed with a bleeding tumour.,but stale blood could also indicate other issues like colitis, chrones or imflammatory conditions of the bowel..

If it is stale blood you should definitely inform your doctor right away and get a referral to a consultant.who will act to find out the cause and do what is needed to resolve your issue,

    take care,

  • Thanks for your reply,

I have gone to doctors many times about the bleeding but they never take it anywhere further. I think it may be due to may age. I'm 20 years old, so they pawn it off as stress or being of being overweight. I've had this problem for years and when I first when during covid, I was told to wait until it was over. And after I've gone after doctors it's blood test and stool sample and they never do anything else.

  • Okay Abbie,

l understand better from your reply. The doctors have checked for any cancer markers and they have always come back clear, so thats good news. Since you do not mention pains associated with the bleeding, thats also good news. What you are left with is distinguishing between fresh or stale blood  and its cause,Stale blood would certainly point to a deeper seated issue, but either is pointing to inflammation of the bowel.

There is a telephone number linked to this site that allows you the opportunity to speak to a specialist cancer nurse, so l think you should and see what advice they can offer, and at least put your mind at rest concerning cancer.

    take care,

                       David
