Dermoid cyst on ovary - referred for CA125

Hi everyone

I'm 47 and had a transvaginal ultrasound at the weekend to explore some mid cycle bleeding and although that seemed to be ok, they found a 5cm cyst on one of my ovaries. The lady that gave the scan really downplayed it and didn't allude to anything problematic. Yesterday the GP called me and said I'd been referred to Gynae and for a CA125 blood test. Now I'm terrified! If it was 'just' a cyst, why have I been referred for a blood test? I'm so scared. Haven't slept. Keep crying with worry. My head is all over the place. Now I'm worried the bloods will come back with high levels and the cyst isn't what was suspected... help :(

  • I had exactly the same 25 Aug this year and have still not been told anything about my CA125 and biopsy. I also had a ct scan as the cyst was very large (27cm). I only know that because my gp surgery received a letter yesterday and I phoned them today.

I'm nearly 53 now but had symptoms 5 years ago, when I was the same age as you. Doctors dismissed it. They were awful, really nasty, told me there was nothing wrong with me, I was wasting their time.... they refused to refer me to the hospital. I was so upset when they told me to go and see a counsellor I never went back. I did change gp surgeries but they dismissed it as a virus. Even though I told every doctor or nurse I saw I was fat round my tummy they never took any notice, just weighed me and checked my thyroid.

I have spent 5 years not sleeping, unable to breathe properly and worrying what is going on with me. The pain is unbearable, my organs are all squashed and I am always needing the loo.

If your CA125 is high someone should contact you so try not to worry and just be grateful you have been diagnosed fairly quickly. Contact your gp as they should receive updates from the hospital.

Hope it all works out fine for you x

  • I just tried to respond to this but my reply vanished so you might get this response twice.

Thank you for sharing your experience but how absolutely awful for you being in pain for so long and being dismissed and made to feel like you were wasting their time.

Did the GP give any indication of when the results might be back or whether they have referred you for follow up treatment? It's just dreadful that it's taken so long. X

  • I only spoke to the receptionist and she told me the hospital would be in contact with me but could not tell me when. I've asked them before and just been told I need to speak to the hospital doctor, but never been told who that is!

I think the hospital check the CA125 and do a biopsy as routine if post menopause so may be different for you. Most of my info was given to me by the PMB nurse. She said I'd need surgery to remove and it would be fairly soon. No one else tells you anything. The numbers you ring are just answer phones and no one ever calls back.

From reading up about these things 5cm is something they may just monitor initially and fairly common so try not to worry. Hopefully thats what they have referred you to gyne for and they will be far better to keep a check on things then the gp.

I was only sent to the hospital because I asked the gp if I could have some hrt to help me sleep etc. He was about to give me a prescription and then almost as an afterthought asked if I'd had any bleeding. I did about 8 months ago so when I told him he pondered whether I should go to the PMB clinic. He totally missed the fact that my tummy is huge even though I told him I get asked if I'm pregnant (quite embarrassing at 52)!

I'm sure you will be fine, the gyne people will look after you and if you need any treatment or it removed you won't have to battle your way through the gp system x

  • Thank you. I really hope you get some answers soon. I think they forget that there are real people behind those patient notes sometimes! Let me know how you get on. Is it worth going down to the hospital maybe? It's harder to ignore you when you're stood in front of them!

  • I had similar in June after an ultrasound scan - 2 cysts on each ovary, the largest being 5.5cm. I had the blood tests, CT scan and MRI. I got a letter giving results of ultrasound and hysteroscopy a week or so after the appoinment but it was just over 4 weeks altogether before I got my results - CA125 within normal range and scans showed nothing suspicious - cysts now described as 'benign-looking'.  They asked for the blood tests to be repeated after 4 -6 weeks - my GP said most small cysts disappear on their own after a few months - but they like to check out those that get above the 2-3cm.

  • Thanks for your message and sharing your experience. From what I've googled (I know, I know), dermoid cysts don't go on their own so I think they look to remove them. The whole thing is just giving me the panics... being a woman sucks balls
