On HRT and have a breast lump

Hi everyone,

I recently found a hard painless lump in the right side of my right breast. Today my GP referred me to the breast clinic and I'm waiting for an appointment (2ww).

I've had two breast cysts removed in the past (10 and 6 years ago) but that was before I started HRT. I'm 45 years old and have been on HRT for 4 years due to an early perimenopause triggered by Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) which was diagnosed when I was 35.

I'm very worried because apparently the risk of breast cancer increases when using HRT for more than a year. I keep telling myself that it's probably just another cyst but I'm still scared.

I'm also chronically fatigued although this could be a symptom of perimenopause.

I'm not overweight, I don't smoke and drink about 1 bottle of wine per week. My diet is ok (could be better tbh) and I walk the dog for 30 - 60 mins 5 days a week.

I wanted to share my concerns on here as I don't want to worry my family. However my husband knows and is upbeat but I'm losing sleep over this.

Any advice/reassurance/shared experience would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks x

  • Hi Emily,

Well you've done exactly the right thing by going to your GP and getting a referral to the breast clinic. You will worry, it's only natural but you need to find out what it is. Remember 9 out of 10 referrals turn out to be benign but of those that are cancer, can usually be treated so either way, the odds are in your favour that you'll be fine.

I hope you're reassured when you get your appt.

    Take care xx

  • Hi Jane, you so much for your reassurance . My mother-in-law had breast cancer and a mastectomy this year. Fortunately she's now cancer-free but it's been a very tough time. So I guess I'm just hyper-aware at the moment! Fingers crossed it will just be a cyst x
