Oral moderate dysplasia

Hi,

I was diagnosed on 2nd August with oral moderate dysplasia.

I was told I would wait 3-6 months to have this removed but we decided to go private and my op is tomorrow.

I wondered if there are any support groups for this condition and would like to speak to others who have this condition.

I have never smoked, ironically the only member in my sibling family not to. I don't drink to excess however my mum developed oral cancer but she was in her 80's, I am 55.

It would be really good to speak to others, if that is possible because at the moment this all feels quite surreal and a lonely place to be.

Thanks for reading

  • Hello Subiedoo

I just wanted to wish you well ahead of your surgery tomorrow. I'm unsure about support groups although we do have quite a few members who have been through treatments for different oral cancers.

Hopefully, the post-op results will bring some positive news. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

Best wishes for a smooth and swift recovery.

  • Hi Jenn,

    Thanks for you reply.

I have made contact with a local Head and Neck Cancer Charity and they were brilliant but thankfully I do not have cancer, although my mum died and started with oral cancer before it spread to breast cancer. My mum started with dysplasia and eventually had the neck dissection op because it returned and they couldn't remove it without major surgery.

I feel at best I can have this cut away but since I do not have the usual risk factors as habits of mine I do have a genetic link and wanted to speak to others possibly in a similar situation. How do I find out if there is a specific support group for oral dysplasia or is there not one that you know of?

    Thanks very much

  • Hi Subiedoo,

Glad to hear you reached out to the local charity.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of a support group specific to this condition, and after a quick search online there don't seem to be any obvious ones showing up.

You could always see if your doctor knows of any local or national groups. Also sometimes there are groups on Facebook for support for specific issues.

    All the best,
