Should I push for biopsy? (Mole)

Hi all, I am 25 weeks pregnant and I've been seen by two doctors who have examined my shoulder mole, that although hasn't changed at all visually, has become tender and itchy. Both doctors deemed it looked normal, one used a dermatascope to examine. She did say to reassure me, she would send the dermstascope image to a dermatologist to confirm that it looks benign. However it continues to itch and cause discomfort. If the dermatologist agrees with my GP that all looks ok, is it wise to push for a biopsy given my symptoms, or trust the experts? I know nobody can decide for me but I suffer with health anxiety so sometimes an extra piece of advice helps me. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

It's not unusual for moles to change, itch or new moles appear during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. The dermatologist may say they want to examine it, or to wait until after you've given birth to check it or they may agree with the GP's decision. If they say the latter and it's still causing you concern, you are within your right to push for a dermatologist to check it in person. If they still say it's benign but it's causing you health anxiety, they may agree to remove it but it's up to the consultant.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you for the reply Angie. I also submitted a photo to the SkinVision app that I saw you recommend to another user, (thank you!) - the report came back as low risk, with no reason found to worry about the mole, which I guess is reassuring(?) I think my main concern is that can a mole suddenly become itchy and sore, with no visual changes and not be melanoma!

  • Yes it can if there is an infection underneath it or if it's been caught. Have you changed washing powder, shower gel or skin moisturiser recently? It's good that the app came back low risk. If dermatology also say it looks fine then perhaps keep a photo diary of it for a few weeks. If it continues to itch and be sore or the mole changes, see your GP again and ask for a referral. Good luck x
