Worried about referral after smear

Hi everyone,

I have been overthinking and googling and probably just getting myself worked up since I've had my smear on Wednesday. I had breast cancer over five years ago so I do worry alot more since then. Anyway I went for my routine smear and straight away the nurse said I'm going to have to refer you to hospital as she found bumps on my cervix that she said were nabothian cysts, she then asked me if I had any other symptoms which have been watery discharge. I've read that normally if nabothian cyst then it's harneless and won't need any treatment so I'm not sure why I have been referred. Anyone else had similar?
thanks so much x

  • Hi Reenie-M

I can understand why you are concerned, especially after a previous cancer diagnosis, but as you rightly say nabothian cysts are nothing to worry about. However, the nurse needs to be sure and so to confirm her thoughts will have referred you to be checked by a gynaecologist. She is just being thorough, and does not necessarily have the knowledge to say what these are on the basis of her examination during the smear.

It's best to be checked by a specialist, so try not to think ahead too much, and I hope everything turns out to be nothing of concern. x
