Lymphoma without visible swollen glands

Hello everyone,

Please forgive me for the length of this post. Brevity has never been my strong point, and I feel like I can't tell anyone about this in real life because I'd be labelled as a hypochondriac.

My boyfriend has been having some concerning symptoms recently. For a few months now, but getting worse in the past few weeks, he's been so tired all of the time. He can sleep for 7-8 hours, even more, and it won't make a difference, he will be shattered all day every day. It doesn't help that when he does sleep, his nights sweats are so severe that he not only soaks his clothes and the sheets but he soaks me too. He's also lost a lot of weight, his trousers fall off him and when I hug him I can feel the bones in his spine.

After a lot of encouragment, because those symptoms are far from normal, he saw a locum GP last week. There was no swollen glands in his neck, armpits or groin. The GP said that it was either lymphoma or night terrors and sent him for a chest xray. I know for a fact that he doesn't have night terrors as he sleeps normally - just very very damply. But we were told that because he apparently doesn't have any noticeable lumps (except for 2 lymph nodes in his neck that came up 2-3 weeks ago from tonsillitis) and because of the duration of these symptoms, it's "probably not lymphoma." He did later say that he miscommunicate the length of symptoms with the GP, he said that he gets hot at night for years but it's only really bad for a few months along with the fatigue and the weight loss.

His bloods were fine other than showing that he had a recent viral infection (the tonsillitis 2-3 weeks ago). He is still waiting for the results of his xray, we were told that it would take 7 days for the results to come back to the GP. My question is - has anyone here in their own experience know someone/has been diagnosed with lymphoma with no obvious external swollen lymph nodes?

I know these symptoms could be caused by stress or anxiety or other such things, but I know that this combination of them is not good and I don't know what else it could be. He is also 22 (I'm 21) so I know that lymphoma type cancers are seen in our age demographic. I just can't stop worrying about him. I can see him get worse every day and I am beside myself with worry.

Again, sorry that was long, I just had to get all of this out of my head and into words. Thank you for reading (if you got this far!)

  • Welcome to the forum 50gecs although I'm sorry to read about the symptoms your boyfriend has been having and for the worry this is causing.

Many of our members have been in similar situations so you are not alone on this journey and hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

If you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very friendly, and supportive, and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

Waiting for results is always tough but we'll have our fingers crossed the results come back within the time frame your boyfriend was given and that they bring good news.

We're thinking of you both and hope your boyfriend is able to get some answers soon.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi.

Yes I started to get drenching sweats in mid January 2022, but no obvious swollen nodes until the end of March. Even then it was only one, in my groin.

I had no weight loss or fatigue, and my bloods showed nothing that concerned my GP.

However a subsequent scan, in April, showed numerous abnormal nodes deep in my abdomen, which were not visible on the surface.

A needle biopsy of the node in my groin confirmed Stage 2 Diffuse large B- Cell Lymphoma, and I started R-Chop chemo in May.

I would press your doctor to refer your boyfriend for a scan, asap.... if only to rule out Lymphoma.

  • Hi,

I am aware that this thread is a few months old but I hope someone replies or that it helps others in a similar situation.

My boyfriend's chest x-ray ended up being clear so his symptoms were attributed to stress and "being a man". However, the symptoms he has struggled with the most (fatigue, loss of appetite and night sweats) have persistied and now 4 months later a massive lump, a biiiig swollen gland, has appeared on his neck. I'm writing this right now because he gets the results of his blood tests and his ultrasound scan today (I know that biopsies are the definitive procedure for a diagnosis of lymphoma). I am so so worried, not only because of him but my dad is also waiting on some biopsy results too of his prostate.

Please wish us all luck. I love him so much.
