Absolutely terrified. Cervical cancer symptoms

Hi all,

I'm absolutely terrified to say the least. My last period before this came heavier than usual and was within 2.5 weeks of my previous one. It was also heavier and lasted longer. I never usually get periods regularly, usually 5 times a year.
This months one has been horrific. I've been bleeding for 3 weeks now. Heavy clotting. The bleeding could stop during the day then at night I'm bleeding through pads and tampons. Then stop again. It's so unpredictable it it is every day. I've also had severe back pain the last week and nothing is helping it.
I had a vaginal ultrasound which came back as normal. No fibroids etc seen. Only issue was that my lining was thick considering the amount of blood I've lost.
Im terrified it could be cervical cancer. I went for a smear a few weeks ago but the gp couldn't get a sample due to the location of my cervix so I've been referred to the hospital. The wait times are crazy so I've a private consultation on Wednesday with a gynaecologist. I've historically had abnormal smears and positive for hpv.
has anyone been in the same boat and been ok as I'm losing my mind here!

  • Hi. I fully understand where you are coming from.  What I can say is that you have done the right thing with the private appointment.  It easy for people to tell you not to worry but you will.  I am only on again this for the first time in 3 years as I first had cancer four years Ago and had been doing good but I had a scan yesterday got results today. A little to quick and they are looking at a new cancer so I need a CT scan and an waiting this time not good

try and have a good friend that you can talk with and go out and about to try and keep your mind clear. Thinking of you

  • I feel your pain. I've been bleeding outside of my period for 2 months. Gone for a smear and waiting for the result but it's going to be in 4-6 weeks. I'm so scared I've got cervical cancer. The nurse has taken swabs as well but I wasn't advised what for so I'm even more concerned now. I'm thinking of you at this time! We are strong and can get through whatever the result is!

  • Hi Sc1984

I notice you asked a question of the nurses, but as it's a bank holiday weekend they will not be available until Tuesday. I just wanted to come here to say hello so that you knew your post had been seen.

It's good that you have a private appointment arranged so you will be seen next week, where a smear might be possible done by the specialist. If not, I would expect you to at least have an examination.

However, some of the things you have mentioned, like a thickened womb lining, are not indicative of cervical cancer, so your symptoms could be many other things gynaecological, especially if you are young. I know it's difficult not to panic and worry, but until you have your appointment no-one can tell you any more, not even the nurses on here.I hope things go better than you are imagining, and please let us know how you get on.x

  • Hi Kapow94

Swabs are usually taken to check for any infection-it's nothing sinister, and isn't someth8ng done to check for cancer. x

  • Thank you so much for your response, I was hoping you'd reply. I am hoping it is just an infection rather than anything more sinister. When she did the smear test she didn't mention seeing any abnormalities, and I've seen on some other threads people being fast tracked at time of smear for further testing as they spotted things. Is that accurate? I'm hoping the fact she didn't mention anything untoward might be a positive. I've got really bad health anxiety and haven't been able to sleep, and I'm hardly eating worrying about the results. I have to call Tuesday for results of the swabs but the smear test is a 4-6 week waiting time. Thanks again!

  • Thank you for your message. I really appreciate it.
I'm thinking of you and hope you get your scan soon and have some answers ️

  • Thank you. Waiting for the results is the worst isn't it?
I'm very lucky I can go private but there is still a wait time and your mind goes off on a tangent. We've just buried my father in law who had cancer and died within 6 weeks of diagnosis so cancer is just in my mind all the time now!
I hope you get a positive result and all is ok for you ️

  • Thank you. Apologies I am from Ireland so didn't know about the bank holiday.
you've no idea how much you've put my mind at ease. We've just buried my father in law who died of cancer and it was all very sudden from diagnosis to dying so our minds are all over the place.
the constant bleeding and now back pain are worrying me but I'm hoping that because my ultrasound didn't show up anything except a thickened lining (10mm) that it is gynalogical. I'll even take early menopause over this worry.
    I am 38.

  • I think that is she didn't mention anything untoward that was visible, then that's a positive sign. The screening test is now checking for hpv, and if that is positive then a check will be made for abnormal cells. But it's important to remember that abnormal cells are not cancer, and can be easily removed.

I appreciate that you have health anxiety, which is not something I suffer from, so things are more difficult to deal with, but hopefully all will be well.x

  • Hi again

There is a holiday for the Queens funeral on Monday, which is why the nurses won't be available. I'm so sorry to read you've lost your father in law and appreciate that this will bring cancer to the forefront of your thoughts, but try not to let those thoughts run away with themselves if you can. I'm 4 years out from my original diagnosis, and every cancer is different, as is every individual.

I'll be hoping for straightforward results for you from your appointment, and hope you'll come back and let us know how you get on. x
