Smear results

Hi

i recieved my smear results on Wednesday and it states they are HPV positive. Also it says there are abnormal cells and will be sent an urgent colposcopy appointment as I'll need treatment (which I recieved the next day)

the reason I'm freaking out is that it doesn't state what grade the abnormal cells are. And from what I've been reading from other people is  they always state the grade. Does this mean it's probably cancer as when I asked the doctor how bad the abnormal cells were she just said they are 'suggestive of'

has anyone had their results letter where it just stated abnormal cells and not the grade.

sorry if this post is a bit blunt but I'm really scared right now

  • Welcome to the forum Jazzty although I'm sorry your results letter didn't give you more information about the grade of your abnormal cells.

I hope this information we have about the different types will help answer some of your questions but if you'd prefer to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, they'll be available from Tuesday onwards on 0808 800 4040 between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable in this field and will do all they can to explain this in more detail and put your mind at ease.

Many of our members know what it's like to be in this position so you are not alone and hopefully you will receive some support and advice from them soon.

We're thinking of you Jazzty and wishing you all the best with your coloposcopy.

    Kind regards,

  • I had a letter 2 weeks ago saying the same, I've been hpv positive for 3 years now so was expecting that part but not the abnormal cells. Doesn't state what grade & it's a 10 week wait for colposcopy for me as they are so busy. It's hard waiting for that appointment as I also have symptoms. If this is your first positive hpv hopefully it won't be too bad as it developes very slowly apparently. Fingers crossed for you that everything is ok!

  • Hi, thanks for the reply. This is the first time my results have shown the HPV result as at my last smear I don't think they tested for it yet. I was lucky that I got my colposcopy appointment letter the day after I recieved my smear results (it's in two days)  A 10 week wait seems awful! Especially if you've been told there's abnormal cells.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your symptoms?

  • Yes that's very lucky I got my letter the day after but had to ring them for an appointment so they have my details and said they will call me in 10 weeks when it's my turn. I'm going out of my mind waiting. The symptoms I have are abnormal bleeding, bleeding after intercourse, pain during intercourse, lower back pain & pelvic pain. Although I was on the depo until recently which can cause abnormal bleeding. Good luck for Wednesday I hope you get some answers and everything is ok

  • Thankyou. I hope you get an appointment in less than 10 weeks and everything is ok for you too..

it's the waiting that's absolutely awful

  • Hi Jazzy,

I wondered how you got on following this post. I have received the same letter as you- HPV and abnormal cells but no grade given. It says treatment is needed and an urgent appointment for next week.
Just wondering what others peoples experiences have been.
    hope you are well
    Thanks

  • Hi

I've got hpv. And cin 2 abnormal cells.

Waiting for a appointment for  the lletz and coil removal (got to be under general anesthetic) as the coil is stuck.

I did try to have it removed last week but the pain was horrific.

    Best wishes to you x
