No Breast Cancer but possibly Cervical Cancer!

Hey all,

I hope you are all doing okay. I had symptoms of what I thought was breast cancer earlier in the year and thankfully turned out all okay and was a fungal infection. After that, I've started bleeding in between periods and having twinges every now and then at the bottom of my belly. I am 28 and went for my first smear (originally booked and cancelled during COVID) and I am so concerned now I potentially have cervical cancer. I've been told by the nurse the results will take 4-6 weeks and they've also taken swabs but I wasn't advised what that was for, the nurse said the doctor asked for them to be taken..

The nurse didn't mention seeing anything during my smear and wondered if those who were diagnosed had any signs at their smear that there was something further wrong?

I have really bad health anxiety and my smear was only yesterday so knowing I've 4-6 weeks to wait and then potentially a lot more tests before I find out either way is terrifying. I'm trying to get a clearer picture as some people on forums said the nurse referred them straight to the hospital for further testing after their smear as they spotted irregularities, but some are also saying they didn't find out until the smear results came back?

Thanks all!

  • Hello Kapow94,

I am glad that all symptoms of breast cancer turned out to be just a fungal infection. It must have been a real relief for you. I am sorry to hear though about this latest scare and it must be a very stressful time for you as you are waiting for results to come through.

I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have been through something similar and have had this type of experience and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

All you can do really for now is wait which is the hardest thing to do as many on our forum will know only too well. A 4-6 weeks wait can indeed feel like a lifetime. I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
