Colonoscopy fear !

Hi all. I have been having tummy issues on and off for years but the last few months I have had diarrhoea every morning.  Very bloated after eating and gassy. I feel nauseous and exhausted and lost over a stone. ( not complaining). My gp did a calprotectin test a couple of weeks ago it came back at 543mg repeated last week and is 693mg. I am also anemic ( have been for a few years). Gp rang yesterday to give me an urgent referral and said I will have colonoscopy.  I had one in 2019 and it was honestly one of the most traumatic experiences of my life and there have been a few. I had four people pinning me down, I was screaming the place down.  I was sedated i had extra iv pain meds and gas and air. Apparently I have a twisted and tortuous bowel.  I am absolutely terrified of having another, I really don't think I can do it.  Anyone had full anesthesia with colonoscopy!  X

  • Welcome to our forum and you are not alone in your fear of this procedure as many others have suffered and the procedure abandoned, including me.  I went to my GP and said I would not go through it again and without advising me at all I was sent an appointment the night before to have an early morning scan.  This was done by injecting dye into me whilst laid flat on the scanning table, a wonderfully kind nurse was with me and it was all over in half  an hour, no horrible stuff to be drank the day before, no rushing to the toilet etc.  So call your surgery and ask if this can be done due to previous experience of trauma.  Good luck and I hope all goes well for you.  Carol

  • Hello,

l have had two,and on both occaisions although l remeber the probe being inserted, the next thing l was aware of was waking up. So not sure how l was knocked out, but maybe the fact that l pointed out to the team that l had a habit of lashing out at anyone inflicting pain upon my person might have had a bearing on the matter !!!  Anyhows happy to report both myself and the medical staff emerged unscathed but not my bowel since it had a tumour for a lodger.

hope all goes well for you,

                                                                                                                                       David

  • I had one last year they used CT and an injection no sedation needed as it doesn't hurt just a feeling that you may have peed yourself when they injected the meds. I had the bowel prep that was the worst bit. My doctor said that most colonoscopy scans are done this way nowadays.
take care hope it's over soon
