Can't stop worrying about cervical cancer

Hi, I'm 19 years old and I have been having some distressing symptoms, including pain during intercourse and once (a few weeks ago) bleeding during intercourse. I went to the GP yesterday and she said it looks like I have a cervical ectropion, which has an increased likelihood of occuring if you take the pill (which I have been for the past 3 and a bit years). She referred me to a gynaecologist urgently (I think the urgency may be due to the last time I had an appointment with less severe symptoms was in october plus I'm meant to be moving to uni soon). However, I am so worried about cervical cancer. I have had severe health anxiety due to my mum passing away 4 years ago and this has flared it up massively. The doctor said she thinks that it is a cervical ectropion and the referral is just to rule anything else out, but how do I stop worrying? I've convinced myself before that I've had cancer with absolutely no reason to believe so (anxiety is crazy) but now it feels so much more real and I'm so scared.

  • Welcome to our forum, sam606.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your mum 4 years ago and that now you're having to deal with all this discomfort and worry about the possibility you might have cancer. On the positive side, I'm glad you took control and went to the doctor who had you referred.

Hopefully, others who have had similar experiences will come along shortly to offer some insight and advice. Alternatively, if you feel like asking some questions to our team of nurses, they'd be happy to chat with you Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

Fingers crossed your next appointment will show you have nothing to worry about. Once you know more please come back and give us an update. We're thinking of you.

    Best wishes,

  • I have terrible health anxiety too and I've got symptoms of cervical cancer so I know exactly how you feel. I can barely sleep or concentrate I'm so worried. Try not to Google as it makes things worse, cervical ectropian is not cancer so try and focus on that, rather than worrying it's something more serious. Try taking your mind off it by doing other things, speak to family and friends for support. Thinking of you!
