Post menopausal bleeding, bit worried

Hi there, I'm worried about postmenopausal bleeding and this forum seemed like a good place to have a chat with people. I'm 51 and have not had a period for over 2 years. Over the last 6 weeks I have had 3 episodes of bleeding, all lasting a few days. I'm currently having an episode now, but with this one I am having period pain just on my left side and significant bloating, to the point I can't eat past 2pm. I just wondered if anyone else has had this? I have also had unexplained, chronic diarrhoea since January, though that may not be connected. I had an ultrasound which was supposed to be transvaginal, though on the day they decided just to do on my abdomen rather than internally. As far as I know, it didn't show anything. I'm not normally a worrier, but I am now!

  • Hi KerryLouise

You should go back to your GP if you have had further bleeding.
i am 60 years of age and haven't had a period for around 8 years. I have had 2 episodes of bleeding just as you say with pain low down in my groin which my consultant says is pelvic pain. My 2 episodes were 6 months apart. After the first I had trans vaginal ultrasound. Nothing was found. The 2nd episode was on July 7th, I went back to my GP and I then had another appointment where they did a further internal ultrasound. My consultant, different to the first, said she couldn't see my cervix to make a proper examination, therefore couldn't understand how my GP could collect a proper sample for cancer smear purposes. She sent me for a MRI scan to determine what was happening, I have an appointment on November 14th to find out results.

  • Hi BHB1961,  thanks for your reply. I really hope the MRI results do not show anything sinister. It's such a long time to wait which is horrid for you. I was supposed to have a call-back from my GP on Friday but it didn't happen. I don't have much faith in my GP surgery to be honest. I will try again tomorrow as I've had such an uncomfortable weekend and I'm sti bleeding. I imagine it's just a final period to end all periods!

Good luck with you, let me know how it goes.

  • Please get it checked, if you've not had a period for 2 years then something is wrong.

  • I had this, had a proper period.

After biopsies and everything came back ok I was told this happens alot like the ovaries kick up for one last time but it is important to get it checked just in case.

  • Evening All.

I am 43 I've not had a period for three years but had in last 6 months started HRT.. I've had some bleeding... some brown discharge and light bleeding and few weeks later bad cramps and heavy bleeding. I've had ultrasound with thickning of the cervix identified  and booked in for thr camera procedure tomorrow.. Feeling a little nervous but hoping its the HRT that is doing this?

  • That's good to know. Thanks Ineedabreak x

  • I wondered if HRT was causing my bleeding, though I've not had bleeding with it before. Good luck with your procedure tomorrow. Let me know how it goes.

  • I spoke to the GP this morning who said that my transvaginal ultrasound was normal, therefore no other tests were indicated. She put my postmenopausal bleeding down to hormones. Is that right? Should I be asking for further tests like a hysteroscopy? I only ask as I am aware of people on here who have said how long it took for the GP to take their symptoms seriously, and then found they had cancer.

  • Hi Kerry

You said you ended up not having a transvaginal ultrasound but an abdominal- is that right? If I were you, I'd want further investigations rather than putting it down to hormones. Having had post menopausal bleeding myself, I don't feel your doctor should dismiss your symptoms without you seeing a gynaecologist. Just my opinion.

  • Thanks Minska, that was what I was thinking. It's hard to get past the GP sometimes
