Been waiting for biopsy results for over six weeks

I had an excisional biopsy of a mole on the 29th of july. I've recieved no news as to what the mole is, i suppose if it's taking this long then it can't be anything bad- but i really want to know! i've been agonising over it every day. I'm unsure whether to contact my GP or the hospital at which i had the biopsy (no clue what department to call either...). I feel completely in the dark, it can't possibly be normal to have to wait this long for some results? i'm starting to think they've forgotten about me.

  • Hi Kazoobies,

Unfortunately I think the wait through the NHS is currently about 8 weeks. I had one removed yesterday and was told an 8 week wait so you may have a couple of weeks to go.

    It absolutely sucks. :(

  • Jesus, that's abysmal. I feel stupid for ever getting it checked because i've got a pretty ugly scar now but my doctor agreed that it had to go. I hope you receive your results soon and that all is well.

  • Aw yeah I will also have a fairly large and ugly scar too, but to be honest I would rather that than skin cancer. I am just hoping that I get a good result and the wait is going to be excruciating I fear. I am also having to delay IVF treatment until I find out the results which is gutting, but necessary at the moment. I hope you get your results soon.

  • Hi,

Sadly biopsy results are taking longer due to the delays caused by Covid. Before this, results averaged 3 weeks whilst the average wait is now 10 weeks. It's a bummer for patients as waiting is the hardest part of this experience. If you want to chase them up, contact the dermatology department at the hospital you attended as your GP won't get your results before you do.

I know that excision scars aren't pretty but please don't feel stupid for having your mole removed. Better to be alive with a scar than dead with perfect skin. Good luck with your results and please let us know how you get on.

  • The hospital department will be dermatology or surgery, l would speak to the secretary of the departments they can look up your hospital number for you and see which department or specialist you are under.  I hope you have your results soon
