Firm fixed breast lump

Hi, I am 47 with 2 teenagers. On Monday evening I found a firm breast lump that doesn't move. It feels like the size of a pea but is smooth. I attended my GP on Tuesday morning (we have a small rural practice) and was referred fir an urgent assessment. I was very lucky to receive a call from the hospital on Wednesday morning and gave an appointment on Monday. I appreciate that this is moving very quickly which is great however I have been struggling to take it in, been googling far too much and as a result have worked myself into a frenzy. I have good family support who are all staying the right things but I can't reason with myself to calm down.

Just wondering what will happen at my appointment and will I get an indication of what's happening on Monday. Also is a fixed firm smooth lump more likely to be malignant?

thanks xx

  • hi i have the exact same thing mine feels just above my nipple under neath also i have an appointment on monday can't wait for it to be over

  • Hi, me too...the weekends normally fly past but at the minute I feel like every minute is dragging. Good luck on Monday

  • Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know what happened at my appointment so you can have an idea of what to expect. I had my appointment on Wednesday.

First you will see a consultant who will have a chat with you and then check your boobs. Then you wait for the mammogram. After the mammogram you will wait again for an ultrasound. Then more waiting. At this point you will either be called back to be told you can go home and no further tests or treatment are required. Or you go back to see a consultant who will tell you about what further tests are needed/they may take a biopsy or talk about treatments. Any tests from this point will take 1-2 weeks.  (Again this was in Leeds and i don't know if it differs elsewhere) Lots of other people brought a plus one. I didn't and wished i had to make the time pass quickly. It can take up to 4 hours. Mine was over that. Take a book or magazine for distraction.

I don't know the answer to your question about a firm fixed lump, but i had a question about my nipple (in my case my nipple was inverting but wasn't permanently inverted). I asked the consultant and they were able to tell me what they would normally expect to see so hopefully they will be able to let you know.

Stay away from google.. your mind will automatically remember anything negative and run with it. I know it's easier said than done!!! Best of luck, sending calm thoughts. And remember you have done the right thing in getting it checked out. Xx

  • I would take someone with me and a list of questions, we forget everything when we get there. Breast clinic are really helpful and they are up to date with the current treatment, Do ask anything you are concerned about.
l have been to breast clinic many times over the last 45 years, my problems are not cancer but could be precancerous milk  duct ectasia and there are many patients like me, in the clinic for other conditions.
I hope you are one of them. Try to relax and and keep busy easier said than done. Take care
