Suspicious mole (potential melanoma) and swollen lymph node

Hello , posting here as I'm terribly anxious and reading some similar posts have really helped me. I am 25.

So a few weeks ago I noticed an irregular mole on the back of my left thigh. At first I thought it was new but I have since gone back through any photos of me that exist and can now see that I've had it for years, however as all the pictures are from far away, I have no idea if it has been this very odd shape. I have spent a lot of time in the sun and used to use tanning beds (I can't believe I was ever so stupid)

I saw my gp who referred me to a dermatologist who has said it needs to be removed and tested. I have been physically sick with worry and no today I have noticed a swollen lymph node (I think) in my right armpit. The lump is around kidney bean sized id say and moveable and is a tiny bit tender I think.

My mole is due to be removed Saturday but I am worried sick. I am now convinced that it is melanoma and it has spread to my lymph nodes, the places my mind has gone to I can't even tell you.

Has anyone had any similar experiences or have any knowledge of melanoma/ lymph nodes etc?

Thank you so much in advance

  • Hi Lexi,

Please try not to worry. A node with cancer tends to be hard, immobile and painless. Try not to prod it as they can be aggravated and become large and painful.

Tell them about it when you go for the mole removed. If they think it's suspicious they may arrange an ultrasound or a fine needle biopsy.

Good luck on Saturday and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Angie,

Thank you, even that messsge alone really helps me.

I will let you know how I get on x

  • Hi Angie,

Just thought I'd update. I went for my mole removal today, I told him also about the lump in the armpit and he said that wouldn't be related as the lymph node is too far away and on the other side but he felt nonetheless but didn't say it was concerning as so small but to keep an eye on it. He also felt my groin lymph nodes as they are nearest to the mole but everything was fine.
I asked if he thought it was melanoma and he said impossible to take with the naked eye, but his opinion is he thinks probably not but he wouldn't like to say anymore.
Mole has been sent away for testing and should have results back in 1-2 weeks (I had to go private and my anxiety couldn't hack the long NHS results waiting time) so I will let you know what happens.

  • Hi Lexi,

I'm glad it all went well and his explanation of the route cancer cells take in the lymphatic system has hopefully eased your worries. As he says, keep an eye on the lump but don't be prodding it too much or it will aggravate it and will cause swelling. Hopefully it won't change and your results come back clear. Please let us know what happens.

  • Hello, just thought I'd update for anyone reading as it may give some comfort - doctor called and the mole is completely benign, prior to the call I had also felt 2 swollen lymph nodes in my groin so I was spiralling and thinking the worse but everything seems as normal.

Can't describe what a relief I feel, overwhelming happiness.
