Colposcopy - HPV Cells Found

Hi All,

I've been reading this forum for a while but looking for a bit of info please.

I had a colposcopy on Friday after about 1 year of constant bleeding after sex, back pain, discharge etc and the gynaecologist advised I had a number of HPV cells on my cervix.  It was a nurse that carried out the colposcopy and she seemed unsure but the gynaecologist said due to my age (22) she wouldn't take any further steps after finding the cells and would leave it until I have a smear test when I'm 25.

I was okay with this at the time but since then when speaking to friends and family, I feel I'll only worry for the next 2.5 years knowing I have the cells and worrying that they could develop into something more serious.  Would it be unreasonable to speak to my GP to request a 2nd opinion?  I feel younger people often get turned away for treatment as they're less likely to be affected however it's not impossible.

Any advice or info would be so appreciated.

Thank you xx

  • Thank you so much for taking all the time to reply, I'm going to phone my GP in the morning and ask for an appointment to speak to someone face to face in the hopes that they can help me get the answers I need.  I wasn't sure if I was just being silly and overthinking but you've really reassured me that I need to push for answers!

    Hope you are well xxx

  • Good! Sometimes we need to be proactive and ask more of our doctors. I've seen and read a great deal having dealt with cervical cancer for a long time now. I'm not suggesting for a moment that you have that, but too often I see women fobbed off and told that things are normal, just put up with it, and I don't believe that's right, no matter what age you are. You deserve more and I hope things turn out well for you with getting the answers you need. xx

  • I'd ask about the coil again and how that referral is going. The coil itself can cause severe cramping and irregular bleeding in some people. It did for me.
